Quilt for a Queen
Excitement is mounting at Bernina UK HQ as the first entries arrive for our project to create a charity fundraising quilt to celebrate the 90th Birthday of Her Majesty the Queen. Big thanks to Janet Bowden and Alex Rankin for being the first in with their stunning patches.
We’ve had a lot of interest from people keen to take part in a project that both celebrates her long life whilst at the same time helping a really worthwhile cause, Friends of the Elderly, a charity of which the Queen is patron. Friends of the Elderly provide quality residential care, nursing care and dementia care for the elderly.
In return for a donation, participants are given a six inch square to sew, embroider or decorate with their own design. We are really eager to see what our wonderfully creative Bernina owners produce. We will be constructing both a virtual and physical quilt so all the great work entered can be seen. The finished physical quilt will feature 60 of the patches and will be a visual feast of different colours and techniques all blended, pieced and quilted together. This will be displayed on the Bernina stand at Festival of Quilts before being sent to Buckingham Palace as a gift for Her Majesty.
I have been given the inspiring and, if I’m honest, slightly scary task of creating the central panel. In preparation I have been creating a mood board to develop my ideas and it is full to the brim with pictures of crowns, corgis, diamonds and pearls and, of course, birthday cakes. After gathering all this information there is the question of what technique to use – should it be appliqued, should I use embroidery? Should I incorporate CrystalWorks, as I can’t resist a bit of sparkle? With the extensive range of accessories and software that Bernina has, my imagination is running wild.
We have extended the deadline for entries to the 31st May so there is plenty of time to take part. You can apply directly to us at www.bernina.com//quiltforaqueen or why not check out if your local Bernina dealer is running an event so you can join with others in your area to create your entries?
I think this is a great opportunity to be part of a really fun and interesting project.
