Advent calendar 2016 – the 14th door

When you open today’s Advent Calendar door you will find an idea for girls of all ages who like to dress their hair up beautifully (and what girl doesn’t like to do that?).

BB-Haarspangenkleid

This hair clip cover helps you to transform any dull hair clip into a unique decoration with very little effort. You only need 5 cm long hair clips from the chemists, some wool felt or craft felt, not too thick, 1 mm is enough, a couple of buttons or bells, perhaps a couple of ribbons or bows for additional decoration and my embroidery file, that you can download here:

BERNINA Embroidered hair clip cover

In the ZIP file you will find a sub-folder with the embroidery files for the basic hair clip cover, the poinsettia leaves and the poinsettia flowers. 3 different files in different embroidery formats.

First load the file for the basic hair clip cover into your embroidery machine.

Mount the stabiliser firmly in the embroidery hoop of your machine. First embroider the first colour, which is the outline for the felt you will put on top.

Now place the wool or craft felt onto the embroidered outline, leaving a bit of overlap. First spray the back of the felt with a little spray adhesive.

Then embroider the next colour.Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-3

Take the hoop out of the machine but do NOT remove the stabiliser.

Turn the hoop  over. This is more or less how it will look from behind.

Put another piece of wool felt on the back, well overlapping the previously embroidered outlines.

Fasten the felt with 2-3 strips of adhesive tape.

Now turn the hoop over again and fix it back into your machine. Embroider the next sequence. Both layers of felt are now joined together.
Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-6 You can now take everything out of the machine, remove the stabiliser and carefully remove it from the felt. Cut the outline of the clips with an allowance of approx. 1 mm.

On the back of the clip covers use a sharp pair of scissors to cut, very carefully, a slot of about 0.7 cm in length. Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-8 The hair clip is now inserted here.Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-9 Push it into the slot as shown in the photo so that the majority of the clip is now inside the felt cover. Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-10 Do the same with the other clips. Now put the clips to one side. Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-11 Next it’s time to sew the green leaves of the poinsettia.

Insert the stabiliser again and embroider the first sequence, which is the outline for positioning the wool felt.Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-12 Lay the felt on top and fix with spray adhesive.Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-13 Embroider the two leaves. When that’s done take the hoop out of the machine and cut the leaves out. Here again leave 1 mm from the seam.Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-14

The red poinsettia flowers are worked in exactly the same way.

Insert the stabiliser and embroider the positioning triangle.
Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-15 Lay the felt on top: Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-16 Embroider 4 flowers at once: Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-17 When you’ve cut everything out you should have all the pieces in front of you.Stickbaer-Weihnachtsfreebie-Haarspangenkleid-18 Now you can assemble the individual layers of the poinsettia, sew them together with some thread and fasten them on top with a button or a bell.

Use textile glue to fasten the flowers on the hair clip and you’re done!Stickbaer-Haarspangenkleid-Spange

Enjoy your embroidery and have a very happy Advent,
