Ipad cover

We occasionally take an iPad with us to the doctor or on a long car journey or on the plane. On such occasions, a cover like this is very handy.

An area of this size gives you plenty of room to embellish. LOL! This can be done simply using flock film, as shown above… or on an embroidery machine:

How about a bit of bling? If you have the CrystalWork tool and CrystalWork software, you can really go to town.

I sewed our covers using dieser Anleitung. You don’t always have to reinvent the wheel. However, I only topstitched the front of the flap and only used one layer of wadding. This meant that I had to reduce the size of the pattern.

Here are the individual steps I used to make it:

Cutting out: (leave a seam allowance of 1 cm)

  • 2 x lining 22 x 27 cm
  • 2 x shell fabric 22 x 27 cm
  • 1 x flap made of lining fabric 10 x 11 cm
  • 1 x flap made of shell fabric 10 x 11 cm
  • 2 x wadding 22 x 27 cm
  • 1 x wadding 10 x 11 cm
  • 5 cm Velcro

1. Topstitch the flap piece made of lining fabric onto the wadding the width of the machine foot away from the edge.

2. Stitch the Velco onto the second flap piece in the centre, about 2 cm from the top edge.

3. Pin together the two flap pieces with their right sides together and sew with a 1 cm seam allowance. When you do this, leave the bottom edge open. Cut the corners off at an angle, turn and iron. Topstitch on the right side using a long straight stitch.

4. Decorate the front as you wish. Pin the front and back together with the right sides facing each other and sew together using an appropriate seam allowance. When you do this, leave the top edge open. Cut the seam allowances down to 5 mm and cut the corners off at an angle. Turn and push out the corners using a chopstick.

5. On the back, pin the flap piece onto the open edge with the coloured (lining fabric) side face down in the centre and sew close to the edge.

6. Using the lining pieces and and wadding, make a sandwich with four layers, pin and sew. Layer 1: wadding at the bottom. Layer 2: the two lining pieces, the first with the right side facing upwards and the second over it with the right side facing down. Layer 3: the second piece of wadding. When you do this, leave a turning opening of about 10 cm and leave the top edge open. Cut the seam allowances down to 5 mm and cut the corners off at an angle.

7. Pull this “pocket” over the outer pocket and pin it to the top edge. Sew around the top edge using the relevant seam allowance.

8. Turn the right way out through the turning opening in the lining pocket. Iron and sew up the turning opening in the lining pocket close to the edge. Push the lining pocket into the cover. If you wish, topstitch around the top edge.

9. Insert the iPad and mark the position of the second piece of Velcro. Sew on the Velcro.

Note: Of course, you could sew the Velcro on in step 4 instead of step 9. It may be less fiddly.
Et voilà!

Have fun creating!
