How to make decorative Christmas tree pendants (with free pattern)

Everyone has their favorite accessory from BERNINA. I still did not try everything, but this year I fell in love with the Circular Embroidery Attachment.  In the past few months I have been showing several projects in the German Blog where I have used this amazing little tool and hope that I was able to convince some readers to try themselves. Maybe some of you wrote this one down on the x-mas list? Here a quick project for you to try:

Those little wreaths are done on a whim and will bust your remnants stash.

In this video you can see how the Circular Embroidery Attachment works:

Materials needed:

  • wool or textile felt, 1 – 2 mm thick
  • embroidery threads
  • tear away stabilizer
  • grosgrain or woven ribbon (10 cm per wreath for the loop to hang up)
  • other ribbons, bells, buttons and such for embellishing

Take a 15 x 15 cm piece of stabilizer and felt and place them onto the pin. Slide the project all the way to the right and sew a circle with a straight stitch.

Change the size of the circle by sliding the pin in the slot and sew other decorative stitches you like. I made here only 2 circles of stitches, making my wreath about 2 cm wide and found this size to be good for a Christmas tree decoration. You can certainly sew more stitches and thus adjust the size to your liking.

Carefulla remove the project from the pin and turn it over. Fold 10 cm of the grosgrain ribbon into a loop and tape it onto the left side of the wreath as seen in the picture. Following, secure another piece of felt for the back- side of the wreath over the ribbon making sure that the entire project is covered with the felt piece.

Now return the project into the machine placing the sandwich in the same hole. Sew the smallest and most outer circle with a triple straight stitch. Remove the project from the machine and remove all of the stabilizer. Cut the wreath out using pinking shears and cut the center circle out. Be careful not to cut the ribbon off! Embellish as you wish with bows, bells, buttons and such and make another one:-)

With the right tools one can make so many wonderful things. If you ever peek over the fence onto the German Blog, you will have seen that I love to sew free motion. One of my other favorite accessory from BERNINA is the BSR tool. Here a small project using both of my favorite tools:

What do you put on top of your tree?

We have two wonderful mouth blown and hand painted tree toppers from the great grandma. The big problem is that the holes on the bottom are very small and we cannot get it on top of most of the trees we get. The past years we had an angel that our goddaughter made for us. This year we will use this here. What do you think?

You can of course make those as tree decorations as well.

Material needed:

  • larger remnans of coordinating cottons
  • 10 x 10 cm wool or textile felt
  • tear away stabilizer
  • embroidery threads
  • poly stuffing
  • fabric pen
  • optional: some spices like cinnamon, anise etc. for a nice fragrance
  • pattern Star_pattern

Cut 6 pattern pieces without any allowance. Allowance of 1 cm is already included.

Sew 2 pieces together and iron the allowances apart. Sew the third piece and set aside. You now have a half of the star. Sew the second half together and sew both halves onto one another, always ironing the allowances apart.

Transfer the snowflake onto the piece of felt and sew it free motion with the BSR- Foot.

 L1040745

Install the Circular Embroidery Attachment on your machine and place a piece of stabilizer, the star and the piece of felt centered on the pin. Sew the smallest circle possible with a straight stitch.

Trim the overlapping felt away close to the edge just sewn, and sew a satin stitch (narrow zigzag) on the same setting. Remove the project from the pin and remove the stabilizer.

L1040755

Use the front piece as a template to cut the back of the star. If you are lazy like me, just pin the front onto a larger piece of cotton right sides together, sew and then cut out. Sew all around leaving an opening for turning.

L1040758

Oh, I almost forgot: because I want to tie my star on top of my tree, I have sewn some grosgrain ribbon in the middle of the back piece.

Shorten the seam allowances to about 5 mm and clip all the corners. Turn to the right side, iron and stuff. Now you can add some of the spices if you like. This way your star smells like Christmas:-) How does your Christmas smell anyway?

Close the opening for turning by hand and enjoy!

I wish all of you wonderful holidays and lots of fun sewing!

Very pretty and look fun to do. A good reason to play with different stitches on the circular attachment. Thanks.

Two projects for the ‘price’ of one – wonderful. I, too, have the circular attachment and haven’t used it. Now I have to get it out! Thank you, Hilary
