How to make a decorated bin for presents and paper

Dear community,
in this blog post you can find detailed instructions on how to make a decorated bin for presents and paper

A bin – a rubbish bin… Maybe you are wondering what that has to do with the topics of “Pretty packaging” or “Christmas”.

When I discovered this inexpensive bin at IKEA, I had the idea of wrapping it nicely and giving it a slightly different purpose. However, even after being dressed up it can, of course, still be used as a rubbish bin – let’s just say we have given it a few extra features 😉

But now to the required material:

First stick the sewing pattern together and cut your selected fabric (at the fold). Note here that you have to add seam allowances yourself if you have a material that you want to hem. I opted for an artificial leather, which I left unhemmed, since it cannot fray and I like it a lot.

Place the piece of fabric with the right sides together, so you can close the remaining open ends with a simple straight seam. This creates a kind of short, conical tube.

I stitched the turned over seam again on both sides with a different coloured yarn for decorative effect. After sewing, I took a photo so that I could show more clearly where I positioned the foot. Of course you can also just use a twin needle or a different decorative stitch.

When dressed it no longer looks as naked 😉

When I’m not using the bin to carry presents, I use it for storing paper rolls – or even as a rubbish bin.

Please feel to write in the comments section what you would use this gift transporter bin for after it has been emptied – I look forward to reading your suggestions 🙂
