I was recently asked to participate in a Bog Hop for a newly released book.
In the book this ‘scene’ was a Mini Quilt. My daughter loves cushions, especially Handmade ones so I decided to turn the panel into a Pillowcase for her bed.
Today I would like to share with you how simple this is to do with any patchwork panel that you have.
(Please note that I will not be providing instructions for the actual buildings as they can be found in the Book “Quilt Petite” by Sedef Imer).
Requirements:
I trimmed my featured panel down to 17″ x 27″
17″ x 27″ piece of fabric for the back of the Pillowcase (Pink Gingham)
9″ x 33.5″ piece of fabric for the Cuff (White with small print)
2″ x 33.5″ for piping (Soft Green solid)
ALL seam allowances are 1/4″.
Instructions:
Lay your feature panel and your pillowcase back fabrics right sides together, pin and sew along the top with your sewing machine.
Open and press.
Iron your 2″ Piping in half lengthways, wrong side facing together.
Along the long 33.5″ edge, lay your Cuff fabric right side up and then lay the body of your pillow case on top, right side up, aligning the long edge and then lay the piping on top with the two raw edges facing up, again aligning up all edges.
Pin together and then roll up the body of your pillowcase as pictured.
Then bring up your cuff fabric and pin to the edge with all the other raw edges.
Take to your sewing machine and sew all the layers together using a 1/4″ seam allowance.
You will now have a fabric tube. Gently pull out the centre thus turning the cuff in the right way.
Press with your iron.
Fold your pillowcase, wrong sides together and sew along the 27″ edge then turn inside out and encase your first seam within the new seam for a nice finished professional finished look.
With your pillowcase inside out, pin and sew the short end (far right hand side, not the cuff end) closed. Turn right side out press and you have a handmade Pillowcase for that someone special.
I hope that you have found this tutorial helpful and create many special pillowcases for the special people in your life.
Happy Stitching,
Sharon xx
