Dear community,
in this blog post you can find detailed instructions for sewing a festive children’s dress – perfect for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

We always especially enjoy the Christmas season in our family. We love the cosiness of the fireplace when it’s dark and cold outside. Then, we bake cookies together, make crafts, play games and watch fairytale films with an extra helping of home-made popcorn. We come a bit closer together and enjoy our little family and the sparkling eyes of our children even more than during the rest of the year.

As Christmas approaches, my girls start a lively discussion about which outfit they want to wear on the big day. We do not preen ourselves too much, but we do like to wear a nice dress. Increasingly often, I catch them in my fabric shelves and my boxes of remnants. They know that I really like sewing them a dress of their choice for this special day. Here, comfort is the most important factor for me. The garment should not be too tight or too warm when we snuggle up in front of the fireplace.

Choosing a pattern

I prefer to choose patterns with that certain extra something. Patterns that are really quick to sew, but have a particular highlight. That might be a nice collar, a special cut or, as in the case of the Eleena Dress by Coffee and Thread, this unusual fold at the front.

I like the cut. It encourages you to experiment, but no matter how you make it, it always has a festive touch. For my girls, it is of course even more important that you can twirl around really well in the dress.

But to me it also means that it is really comfortable when a dress swings so nicely.

There are some great patterns in which, for example, the bodice is quite narrow, but it is attached to a wide circle skirt. These dresses of course twirl even better and provide additional freedom of movement.

Choice of material

Although any type of cotton is of course much more elegant for a festive dress, I prefer to grab a high-quality jersey and to know that I am not constricting my girls too much.

In the midst of all the finery, the most important thing for me is that my girls remain children in their Christmas outfits and continue to be as wild, cheeky and wonderful as they are on all the other days of the year.

I made my Eleena dress from fine, non-raised Nosh sweatshirt fabric. For this reason, I decided without the need for too much consideration to go for short sleeves  The sweatshirt fabric suits the style very well, I think. It has a bit more body than a simple jersey, creating a particularly good effect on the beautiful fold at the front.

Summary

Sewing a special dress for my own girls at Christmas always has a particular magic for me. Seeing the sparkling eyes of my children in cosy yet elegant festive clothes gives me a good feeling and makes me proud of my little, but noble hobby.

Pattern: Eleena Dress by Coffee and Threads (in German from February 2018 at Nähconnection).

I got the inspiration for this colour combination from the  Made by Sara blog. I thought for a long time about which colours and patterns to use. The mix of dark green with a black and white striped fabric is just perfect, so I ended up making our dress in a very similar combination and I am extremely happy with it.
