Dear community,
in this blog post you can find tipps & instructions on how to make festive napkin rings from felt scraps – perfect for Christmas eve.

Along with sewing and embroidery, my other big passion is cooking. Of course, part of a good meal is a well-laid table. This should naturally include beautiful napkin rings. And since we are a sewing household, our napkin holders are not made of silver or another metal, but are sewn from the finest wool felt.

To make sure everyone can find their seat easily on Christmas Eve, I have added embroidered name tags to my napkin rings, which are partly hand-sewn. The embroidery file for these is available to purchase HERE .

First, I clamp two layers of wash-out stabiliser into the hoop. If you do not have any to hand, you can make do with thick, water-soluble film if necessary, as I have done in this picture.

Now the machine embroiders the positioning line for the wool felt…

… which is attached by the next sequence. This is followed by the name, which I entered into the file using the BERNINA Embroidery Software V8 . Incidentally, you can try out this great software for free for 30 days at the above link – and then you might even add it to your Christmas list!

Now take the hoop out of the machine, but don’t take the embroidered material out of the hoop! On the underside, I use adhesive film to attach another sufficiently large piece of wool felt. My felt is 1.3 mm thick by the way.

Now everything goes back into the machine. While you do this, make sure the felt on the bottom doesn’t move out of place. The next sequence secures all the layers.

Now I take the hoop out of the machine again and cut down the excess felt on the top and bottom edge as close as possible without damaging the sewing. Then put the hoop back into the machine and embroider the final sequence. Please note that the machine has to be threaded with embroidery thread as the upper and bobbin thread for these free-standing objects for a nice result.

So, now you can thread a small piece of cord into the embroidered eyelet and attach the gift tag to the relevant napkin ring.

I wish you a wonderful, creative and not too hectic Advent season!

Best wishes and see you soon,

Claudia
