Nadra and Dorthe – Our joint project

Nadra-und-Dorthe

Greetings from Nadra and myself. We are sitting here among all the projects that we have already completed together. All of the cozy pillows are made from Nadra’s patterns or from her fabrics that she designed for Riley Blake (an American patchwork fabric manufacturer). We are sitting on the garden quilt sewn from her fabrics. I featured the quilt last summer here on this blog.

Nadra is my colleague here on the BERNINA Blog, and I’m sure you are already acquainted with her. Just last fallI told you about an upcoming joint project from the two of us. As it so often does, life got in the way some. But now we are ready at last.

Our joint project

We would like to show you how to sew a cover for your BERNINA. We will provide two size options. One will fit the 700 Series and the other is for the 500 Series.

As of last fall, Nadra is the proud owner of a BERNINA 770 QE. She talks all about it on her own blog www.ellisandhiggs.com . For a long time she sewed using the small BERNINA 215, and she was always happy and satisfied with it. But now that she is also designing her own quilt and patchwork patterns , she decided to treat herself to something a little bigger.

As for me, I am still sewing on an older model, the BERNINA Aurora 440 QE and am still very happy with my machine. I’m toying with the idea of getting a new model, and I already have my eye on one in particular… But, well, what’s that phrase: Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Different Techniques

Our project will involve appliqué and quilting. We will combine both techniques in our project. Our sewing machine cover is going to have a little something special. It will be usable even when the big quilting extension table is attached to the machine. This is a very practical and indispensable component for us quilters.

Do you have anything planned for next Sunday? No? Then it’s a date! Right back here.

Today we want to give you the list of materials so that we can get started together straight away on Sunday.

What you will need for your sewing machine cover:

Cotton fabric for the front, fleece interlining and cotton fabric for the back:

  • 48 x 80 cm each for the small model
  • 54 x 90 cm each for the large model

For the side pieces you will need:

Cotton fabric for the front, fleece interlining and cotton fabric for the back:

  • 36 x 46 cm each for the small model
  • 40 x 50 cm each for the large model

Once they are quilted, the side pieces will be cut out in the following sizes (the 1 cm seam allowance is already included in this measurement):

  • (1) 20 x 30 cm for the right side and (1) 20 x 20 cm for the left side (small model)
  • (1) 22 x 34 cm for the right side and (1) 22 x 24 cm for the left side (large model)

Also

  • 30 cm Vliesofix
  • 2 m woven ribbon (1-2 cm wide) or4x 6 x 50 cm cotton fabric for the ties
  • 5 m (small model) or 3 m bias binding for the edging or 15 cm of material for binding

Useful aids:

  • cutting mat
  • rotary cutter
  • quilting ruler with cm measurements
  • marker
  • temporary spray adhesive
  • paper scissors

This coming Sunday will be dedicated to our sewing machine cover. In the morning, I will show you the small model first, and Nadra will then follow up with the larger model at noon.

We had a few hardworking test sewers with us, and we wanted to show you a few pictures from these busy bees to inspire you. A variety of different covers were created; each of the ladies used their own ideas in their designs.

BERNINA Appliqué foot #23

You must have noticed that appliqué foot #23 is available as the accessory of the month in  January. It is very practical for appliquéing and you still have enough time to get one for yourself by next week.

Would you like a little look at my sewing machine cover?

Here you can see how I am using the BERNINA Q24 to free-motion sew around the lettering.

There’s not much to see yet, is there? Good! We want to keep you guessing just a little bit!

Both of us are really looking forward to next Sunday when we’ll be sewing together!

Best wishes,

Nadra & Dorthe
