Easy instructions for sewing beautiful patchwork pillowcases

Handmade items are popular gifts, particularly at Christmas. They are gifts from the hand and the heart. My experience tells me that pillows are always a joy to receive. A pillow is a useful item that hits the recipient particularly close to home. A pillow is a warming, cuddly, and attractive decoration.

I would like to show you my latest pillow idea to give you some inspiration for Christmas presents that can be sewn quickly. I made this set out of gorgeous Oakshott Fabrics material that changes and shimmers beautifully in the light.

The measurements for the pillows are 50 cm x 50 cm and 40 cm x 60 cm. Because the material already makes a strong impression, I have gone for simple stripes and block patterns. To make the versions larger, I design some pillows with 2 different patterns per side.

And sometimes it may be the same pattern on both sides:

All of the finished sewn side sections are placed on thin liner and quilted. The quilting should be quite plain and minimal so that it fits in with the overall classic impression of the type of pillow you are making.

Both sections of the pillow are put together and an endless zipper is sewn on:

Please make sure that all exterior edges of the zipper are open before sewing the pieces shut:

After you sew together the pillow, cut back the corners and border the pillowcase with a zigzag stitch:

Almost done! Turn the pillow, work out the corners, add the inlet, and give the pillow some shape.

And now you have an excellent handmade Christmas present ready to be wrapped or simply decorated with a big bow.

Wishing all of you BERNINA blog readers a wonderful Advent season, and I hope you all enjoy making these beautiful Christmas presents.

Kind regards

Jutta
