Dear community,
in this blog post you can find detailed sewing instructions for lovely stitched fortune cookies – perfect for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Tomorrow, children, something big is going to happen… Are you completely immersed in the Christmas spirit? Everything decorated, the menu prepared? The table decorations? Is there still room for a little more pizzazz? Or is an original hostess gift a must? Then I have something just for you. And it will take no time at all – I promise. The best part though? If it is not used as a small Christmas gift, it would make a cool gag for a New Year’s party!
Stitched Fortune Cookies
Who is not familiar with the crispy cookies at the Chinese restaurant after all the sweet and sour chicken has been eaten – the obligatory fortune cookie. A nice gesture, right? And since we all like to sew, today I will show you how to make one for yourself – not individually packed in cellophane, but sustainable and guaranteed to be reusable.
Materials required
The fortune cookies would be beautiful made out of two different fabrics. But of course it is up to you if you would rather sew both layers from the same material. The fabric should not be too rigid, and it would a plus if both layers had about the same amount of stability. Suitable fabrics:
- Cotton
- Canvas
- Thin, soft artificial leather
- Jeans (for instance from Upcycling)
I would also recommend that you reinforce both layers with Vlieseline H250 fusible interlining so that the the cookies remain intact and do not fall apart when all is said and done.
If you do not have a circle cutter, you can use the circular form of anything round you may have in your home (recommendation: approx. 15 cm diameter):
- Cereal bowl
- CD
- Saucer
And of course you will need a pen, sewing thread, and fabric scissors.
Let’s get to work
- Transfer the circular shape onto the fabric and the lining. 2 layers of material and 1 layer of lining will be needed for each cookie.
- Cut out the circles.
- Following the manufacturer’s directions, iron the interlining onto the back side of the weaker layer of fabric (if the fabrics are different).
- Now lay both layers right side to right side on top of one another.
- Use the sewing machine to stitch this the width of the foot. Select a straight stitch that is not too long.
- Leave an opening in the seam of approx. 5 cm.
- Now cut the seam allowance as shown in the image above. Careful: do not cut into the seam you just sewed.
- Turn the circle, work the edges out nicely, and pin together or clip the seam opening.
- Now stitch the circle close to the edge with a larger stitch size and close the seam opening.
- Fold the circle in half (the side that will be inside the cookie later is currently on the outside) and use a short quilting seam right where both pins are inserted (see image). Secure the seam well.
- Insert your thumbs into a corner of this quilt seam and turn the circle out onto the other side. (see image above)
- Turn down the nearly completed cookie one more.
- The finished fortune cookie can now be filled with a snappy saying or a good fortune.
