I had 2 classes with Sockmatician, (Nathan Taylor) a knitting miracle from London. He inspired me for a set of positive cards. 1 Music sign ‘dal segno’ embroidery card: ‘Live your life from now on.’
During the workshop he told us about one of the tattoos on his arm, a music symbol (dal segno) and what it meant for him. Even for us heartwarming thoughts!
And it inspired me to design 4 embroidery cards, based on music symbols. From now on, till the end of May, you will find them on the BERNINA blog. And with free download of the embroidery file, of course 🙂
The first card is about the ‘dal segno’ sign. In music scores the sign shows the place where the musician of the singer starts repeating a part of the score. Litterally ‘from here on. And it means a lot in your life!!
LIVE YOUR LIFE FROM NOW ON.
From here, from this point on, your life is happening. Live now and look to the future with hope. Leave the past behind you, with all the setbacks that you might have experienced in your life (relations, professional, financial, health…). They are just brakes you don’t need to take along. Don’t let anything put you down, and start with the possibilities that you still have. They are opportunities to exploit!
What do you need:
- Middle-weight cotton, (a card takes 30 x 20 cm, that you will use folded in two to 15 x 20 cm)
- Cut-away stabilizer
- Mettler Poly Sheen embroidery thread (look for a clear contrast with the cotton).
- Mettler Web Bond adhesive spray
- Embroidery scissors, a cutting mat and a rotary cutter are useful
- Eyelet punch tool (I used one from the eyelet embroidery set nr 82)
- Decovil reinforcement (mostly used in bags)
- The free embroidery file in EXP and PES: Live your life from now on
How to start 1 Music sign ‘dal segno’ embroidery card: ‘Live your life from now on.’?
On the right side of this picture, you find the different steps:
The red numbers are the different steps and the blue lines in between warn you to do something.
Set the cut-away stabilizer (without the fabric) in the Large Oval hoop and embroider rectangle nr 1. It shows you the place where your embroidery will be stitched. Take the colour for the text in nr 3, as nr 1 and nr 2 will be covered by the finishing satin stitch.
Fold your fabric in two and iron it. Lay it over the rectangle that you have just embroidered. Adhesive spray (and pins) will hold it in place. The second step fixes the fabric.
Embroider the red, orange, green and brown for the text and the ‘dal segno’ sign. When this is done, you take away the hoop from the machine and you see that the embroidery is still visible on the back of the card.
Put an extra rectangle of cut-away stabilizer under your project (use adhesive spray/pins).
The rectangle in nr 7 fixes the stabilizer under the project.
Take away the hoop from the machine and iron Decovil under your card. Does it seem difficult? Put a book (in the right dimensions) under the hoop. That helps a lot!
Step 8 stitches the Decovil to you project. It shows a circle for the hole. Take away the hoop from the machine again and make the hole with an eyelet punch tool.
Trim the fabric on the upperside and the stabilizer and Decovil down under as close as you can to the embroidered rectangles.
Finish the card 1 Music sign ‘dal segno’ embroidery card: ‘Live your life from now on.’:
Change bobbin thread to the same colour as the outline of the card.
Step nr 9: stitch the outline of the card and the hole, with a satin stitch.
Can you see how neat the backside is? If you wish so, you can write something for the friend who receives the card:
And your pep talk embroidery card is ready to be sent (or to be hung on your wall)!
I’m curious, you have someone in your mind to give it to?
It will be appreciated. Tell them about the music symbol and what it means!
