Many of you have lavender in your gardens, but almost everyone is familiar with its beautiful specter of colors and pleasant, aromatic scent. Lavender is used in many different ways, and in this tutorial, I will show you how to use it for sachets. As a result, your closet will smell like heaven.
The sachet is a scented small bag made from cloth filled with aromatic ingredients or herbs. Its propose is to be placed in a closet or drawer to make garments smelling beautiful and fresh.
This is a simple sewing project, but very useful.
MATERIAL:
- fabric leftovers (lightweight fabric)
- dried lavender
- satin ribbon (optional)
- matching thread
You still need: sewing machine, scissors or rotary cutter, ruler or measuring tape, pins, paper, pencil, teaspoon.
First of all, make the pattern.
Draw a square 10×10 cm on a paper and cut it out. The seam allowance is 1 cm and included already in the previous measurements. Because of that, the finished size of a sachet will be square 9×9 cm.
NOTE: You can make the sachets of the other dimensions.
Cut out the fabric, as many pieces as you want. Note that for one sachet you need 2 pieces of the pattern.
As I mentioned in material requirements, this is an ideal project for fabric leftovers. You could use any lightweight fabric, and in this post is used lightweight cotton fabric.
Pin these two pieces together with the right sides facing inside.
On one side of sachet mark from each side 2,50 cm (as shown below). That will be the opening through which you will fill the bag.
Stitch it 1 cm from the edge, so that you start on one side of the opening and end on the other. Secure the starting and finishing point by sewing backward and forward.

Cut off the corners, but carefully.
Turn the bag inside out, make sure that the corners look the best they can and press it.
OPTIONAL: Lavender sachets for hang
I wanted the sachets I could hang in my closet too, and not only to put them in drawers. This required something to have to hang on to – a ribbon or similar. In the post is used 1 cm wide double-sided satin ribbon, which I already had in my stocks and you can use what you think is best.
If you want to make some sachet to hang them in your wardrobe too, you can do the following.
Cut the ribbon of 20 cm length.
Pin the ends of the ribbon as shown in the picture below, pin that part in one corner on the right side of one piece of the sachet. After that pin on another part, right sides facing inside.
On one side of sachet mark the opening and stitch it.
Turn the bag inside out and press it.
Finally, fill the sachets.
You can prepare dried lavender yourself, or you can buy it. The lavender I used grew in my mother’s garden, and I cut it when it bloomed, left it to dry and the other day prepared for scented bags. It smells like heaven.
Using a teaspoon, fill the bag with the lavender.
The bag should not be overfilled, and the amount of lavender in the bag is up to you.
For this size of the sachet, I put 5-6 teaspoons of dried lavender in each bag.
When you are done with filling bags, you can hand sew their openings or stitch them using a sewing machine, as follows.
Use Edgestitch foot #10, whereby the needle is on the far left position.
!!! Edgestitch foot #10, plain seam #1, the stitch length 2,5
Stitch the sachet all around. Repeat it for each of them you make.
The lavender sachets are done.
Hi I make these now and again from garden lavender too but slightly different as I add an inner bag for the lavender. I am going to try a mix of cinnamon and cloves for winter sachets – this will be a new idea for me. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
so easy for the kids to sew many thanks
A few cloves added to the lavender intensifies the smell.
