Temple of Eternity – and the sewing machine runs forever

A very special piece of video art!

In June 2019 we received a sponsoring request from a young student of the Film Academy Baden-Wuerttemberg / Germany. It was about a film project which was going to be quite elaborate. The storyboard was already set and the film already had a name: “Temple of Eternity”. As the name of the movie already suggested, was supposed to document the eternity – in this case the everlasting ability to sew own clothes with the help of a sewing machine, as long as the knowledge of how to do this is not lost for the following generations. The students wanted to send a clear message that fits more than ever into the current times: sew and repair your own clothes instead of throwing them away or buying new ones.

Gabriel Becker, directing student of the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg/DE

We were impressed by the idea and the message at BERNINA so much that we agreed to support the project. The storyboard was similar to a little fairy tale and told about the passion for sewing over different generations. The film location, an old, closed leather factory, looked like a journey through time. The factory, founded in 1866, was shut down in 1973, but during a tour of the attic, which was going to be our film location, I found many old leather pieces that had become hard as a board. It was dusty, cold and dark – the perfect place for a fairytale, mystical atmosphere!

Because ” Temple of Eternity ” shows a history over three generations, three different generations of sewing machines were needed. Fortunately, we at BERNINA take care of our old treasures, so after a short revision and some oil care, two beautiful old BERNINA models and a modern B 590 went on the road with me. In 1932, the BERNINA 105, a pedal machine with a cabinet, was the first sewing machine from the Fritz Gegauf GmbH which was marketed under the BERNINA brand name at the time. In preparation for the shoot, I sewed with a pedal sewing machine for the first time myself, and I have to say that I had a lot of fun… and I would have loved to hear all the stories the machine experienced 😉

The BERNINA 730 Record is a model from the 1960s, which was a real bestseller at the time. In that time, it was already impressive with revolutionay technical features. We also used our B 590 – the machine that somehow immediately everyone fell in love with as soon as they sat at it. The two actresses we trained on the machines and the young costume designer from the student team were very enthusiastic about the many great features of the B 590.

The little story of the short film is quickly told. Miranda is a little girl who rips her dress while playing with the other children. Afraid of her father’s anger over the ripped dress, she runs away and hides. In her hiding place she meets a nice old lady, a tailoress, who on one hand repairs the dress and on the other hand teaches her how to sew. Later, as a young woman, Miranda tailors herself, even her engagement dress is self-made, and she loves her independence very much, but her jealous father does not like it. He rampages around her studio and Miranda finds comfort in thoughts of the old lady. Later she is the old lady herself and the story begins to repeat itself when suddenly a little boy stands before her.

The story is simple, but beautifully presented. The students have done an excellent job and worked very professionally. And BERNINA is a proud part of the story.

How did you like the video?

Best wishes

Annett
