The Mega hoop is interesting for cards and borders.

The BERNINA Mega Hoop is very interesting for cards and borders, because it has very handy sizes! It is especially very long. The cards I make and send need to be under 15 cm wide, to fit standard mail sizes. The exact sizes of the Mega hoop are 150 x 400 mm. All of a sudden I realized this is the ideal hoop for making cards.

I wonder if the BERNINA 700 would like this hoop.

A bit more information about the Mega hoop:

The mega embroidery frame (maximum embroidery area 150 x 400 mm) is a professional grade hoop for embroidering extra-large embroidery designs, motif combinations and borders. For it has three possible embroidery positions, to be used for machines with a smaller embroidery size. As a result, the fabric can remain clamped in the frame after completion of the first embroidery area. This allows tidy and accurate working of uniform patterns without the formation of offsets or gaps. Thanks to the template that is included, the fabric can be precisely aligned.

Because of this smart system of the three positions, you can make much larger embroidery projects than your machine would do in the other hoops. Isn’t it genious?

This hoop fits the BERNINA Artista- and Aurora-machines, but also the BERNINA 5-,  7- en 8-series.

When used on the BERNINA 700, you don’t need to change it in the three positions, as your machine can embroider the whole area.

Most embroiderers use it for combinations and borders, because of the long size.

I was used to make fabric cards with the Maxi Hoop, in which I need more stabilizer, because of the wider surface.

Vanaf nu kan ik praktischer werken.

Let’s give it a try with a simple embroidered card

You will find out that this hoop has great sizes for making cards! And that’s why I’m sure you will like it as much as I do!

These are a really quick project for a try: all 3 of the cards together are only slightly over 5000 stitches. And you make your friends and neighbours happy with a small sign.

1. What do you need?

  • For this trial, you can take an ordinary (double layer) of newspaper.
  • 2 sheets A4 drawing paper (trim to 16,5 x 30 cm).
  • Contrasting Mettler Poly Sheen embroidery thread
  • Temporary adhesive spray Mettler Web Bond
  • You can find an old needle? It is ideal for embroidering on paper, because many people say it ruins the sharpness of your needle to stitch in paper.
  • A rotary cutter, ruler and mat are easy to cut out.
  • Download the free files (in EXP and PES): Keep safe cards 3 in Mega Hoop

2. Let’s embroider cards in the Mega hoop!

Hoop the stabilizer or newspaper in the Mega hoop.

The first embroidery line stitches two lines from side to side in the hoop.

Spray temporary adhesive spray in between and position one of the sheets of drawing paper. Press slightly with your hand.

The second embroidery action gives you two lines along the length of the hoop and they sew the drawing paper on the stabilizer.

Now you will embroider the text ‘keep safe’ and the red heart.

Take the hoop away from the embroidery unit and spray temporary adhesive glue on the back of the project. Position the second sheet of drawing paper. Change bobbin thread to the colour in which you wish to embroider the cross stitched frame.

Embroidering is ready. Take the project out of the hoop and cut out with the rotary cutter.

You see how fast you embroidered 3 cards?

Hi, Rachel, for information which hoop suits which machine, and especially for prices, I’d like you to contact your local dealer. I wrote the blogpost on the Mega hoop, but I’m not sure which machines it would fit. Sorry, I can’t help you. Succes! I hope you find the information soon.
