Sugaridoo BERNINA QAL winners || Quilting with rulers – part 3

Part three of quilting the Sugaridoo Bernina QAL quilt with rulers. Today we’ll quilt the final four rows in the quilt.

And! Today the winners of the BERNINA 570QE and the ruler kits will be announced. Scroll down to the bottom of this post to see who won!

Quilting this quilt really sparked my enthusiasm for quilting a large quilt!  I love how you can see quilting improve with every row. Even within a row. The final stitches of a row felt much easier and less forced than the first stitches. So, practicing really makes progress!

Here’s the video where you can see me quilting each of the four designs.

Row #1 – On Point

I am a little bit in love with the texture of small circles on a quilt. So for this row I wanted to try that again. I’ve quilted with one of the Echo Quilt Clips around the triangular shapes.

In the illustration below you can see the path that I made to make this design. First I quilted around the top triangles.

After that I’ve quilted around the bottom triangles.

Row #2 – Out of the box

For this row I followed the diagonal lines within the box. In the video you can see how I first quilted the outside shape and then quilted some lines within.

The lines on the right side in the picture below are a little bit too close together for my liking. The lines on the left are more what I had in mind. So in the rest of the row I’m going to keep that distance between the quilted lines.

Row #3 – Cross Stitch

With the row Cross Stitch I used the circle ruler again. This Echo Clip is a little bit bigger that the one I used on row #1. I used the circle to quilt half circles around the shape of the cross.

This created a kind of scalloped square around the cross. The result wasn’t as spectacular as I thought it would be. But I like it enough. I did go back in and quilt in the ditch around the cross to have some extra quilted lines.

Row #4 – This way

For this row I wanted to alternate some free motion quilting patterns in between the arrow shapes. First I stitched in the ditch around the arrows and then did some free motion quilting.

I alternated between a loop design and short straight lines, creating kind of spikes.

Already with the second try of the loops (the loops below and on the left in the picture above) I got the hang of it a little bit. Both versions of the loops look fine think, but the loops on the left feel a little bit more put together.

With the loops on the right I made loops to the left and loops to the right. Where with the loops on the left I made the loops all go in the same direction. Check out the video to see this in more detail.

Just going for it, trying out an idea and the seeing it improve while you’re quilting is so much fun!

Letting go that it has to be perfect the first time you try it is the most difficult part of quilting i think.

And now the winners!

Can you hear the applause? It is loud and continues for a long while!!! Congratulations to the winners and all who participated/participating! I really enjoyed the time we have spent together and hope we have made friends for years to come. I do enjoy my older bernina 440qe and keep looking at the Q16/20 and long arm to figure out if in my retirement I can do an upgrade.  Be safe and healthy Teresa Foister Fairfield Ohio USA

Inspired by Irene’s creative quilting! I haven’t started quilting mine yet as my craft room is in the middle of renovations and I don’t have a place to sew right now. I started the remodel with the idea of getting a long arm and leaning towards to getting a machine on a frame. It would be great to have this be the first quilt I do on my new machine.

Congrats to all the winners as well. I was hoping to win a prize but still feel like a winner with all that I learned. Thanks so much to Irene and Bernina for sponsoring the QAL. It certainly made a tough year so much more bearable.
