Sewing a dress – “Gitta”

The party dress in a glitz and glamour look goes wonderfully with the sparkling Christmas and New Year’s Eve period. Of course, the festive season this year will be different from previous years. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get dressed up. Even for small celebrations at home, the “Gitta” dress makes a great impression.

Sequins, rhinestones, gemstones – we think that anything that sparkles is absolutely fine, even for this year’s holiday season. The sparkling Lurex dress in stretch material is very comfortable and is quick to make on an overlocker and coverstitch machine. The glittering look with silver, gold and metallic tones is right on trend and is a great addition to any wardrobe.

The cocktail dress has wide-cut sleeves. The extra-long slits in the sleeves, from the forearm to the shoulder, are particularly eye-catching. The fabric is held together by a button at the bottom of the sleeve.

Issue inspiration #72

The pattern and sewing instructions for the dress come from Issue 72 of inspiration. Below is the cover of the 2018 autumn issue.

BERNINA inspiration Magazine Cover issue #72

Issue 72 of inspiration is available as a single issue in the inspiration online shop at the following link:

As well as the dress, in the issue you will also find a matching handbag that you can sew yourself. The small round bag is made out of reflective leather.

The front is decorated with different types of sequins, and a metal chain is used for the strap.

Tip for sewing on the sequins: a clear presser foot makes sewing on the sequin ribbons easier and ensures that you do not lose track.

And if you don’t want to sew a dress, maybe because you are more of a trouser person, no problem – the round bag also looks great with stylish black pants. Either way, it will complement any holiday outfit.

Unzip the zip file containing the pattern

After downloading, you will have a zip file. In the extracted folder you will find:

  • Sewing instructions with information on materials, cutting out and sewing
  • A pattern in A4 format for sizes 36 to 48. You can print this out on your regular printer at home and stick the sheets together. Make sure you print out the pattern using the “original size” setting. Check the test square to make sure the pattern has been printed out in the correct size.

In the article about the “Grace” pants, which were offered as a free download in February, some readers commented that the download did not work for them. Therefore please note that clicking the download button will automatically download the zip file to your computer. You will have to unzip it to access the PDF pattern for the dress. In Windows, you do this by right clicking on the file and clicking on the menu item “Extract all”. On a Mac, you can unzip zip files by double clicking the left mouse button.

Downloaded files are generally automatically put into the downloads folder, but this depends on the operating system, the device used and your local settings. If you download the file on your smartphone and cannot find the file or cannot unzip it, please try using a desktop computer.

Hi, Is there any way to get the instructions only in English, the patterns themselves are not an issue just the instructions. I accidently downloaded from the German site last year. Think I have done this with a few by mistake. Any help would be apprecited. Thanks

Hi, Is a coverstitch absolutely necessary to hem the skirt portion?

      Hy Stephanie,

A Coverstitch is a very easy way to hem stretchy fabric, however, not everyone has a Covermachine at home. I know of these alternatives:
      Usual sewing machine:
      – Twin needle
      –  Stretchy thread: Mettler has a thread called Seraflex. With it you can sew straight lines, but its still a little stretchy. Very usefull indeed.
      – Normal thread:  With normal thread, you could otherwhise use a zig-zag stitch in order to have some stretch without the thread ripping.

      Overlock:
I dont know about lots of tricks with Overlock, but a rolled hem could be possible. I think there is also a blindseam foot for the overlock! I would love to try this once. Maybe you can find a tutorial for it on youtube.

No hem: I once made a dress out of a thicker jersey, which holds up perfectly fine after cutting and did not require hemming. So its also up to the fabric if you need to hem the skirt or not.

I hope these options help you 🙂
      Merry Christmas!
