Sewing the bag with a free pattern: bag “Lu” (January only)

We are continuing our inspiration pattern campaign this year and will be providing you with a free pattern from our magazine “inspiration” each month. This month you can sew a bag – we are kicking off with the “Lu” handbag.

Just as last year, you’ll have to be quick again, because each pattern is only available for free download in the month stated. This means that the January pattern can be downloaded free of charge until January 31, 2021. You can find the download link for the pattern below in the article.

Are you too late, but really want to sew the bag? You can find the pattern in our online shop:

Sewing the bag “Lu”

During the month of January, the pattern for the “Lu” bag will be available free of charge. “Lu” is a functional shopping bag that offers space for all the important everyday items, making it the perfect companion in many situations.

The bag has a simple design that goes with almost any outfit.

For the magazine, we sewed “Lu” in a metallic look:

A silver-colored metal ring connects the two corners of the bag, giving it a modern origami look. The long handles make the bag easy to wear on the shoulder or to carry.

Issue 03/2020 of inspiration

The pattern and sewing instructions for the “Lu” bag appeared in the autumn/winter 2020 issue of “inspiration”. Below is the cover of the magazine, where you can see the bag in combination with a long blue coat.

The 03/2020 issue is available as a single issue in the inspiration online shop at the following link:

In addition to the handbag, the blue long coat and the spotted dress, the issue also contains many other great sewing projects, including various upcycling projects made from old jeans.

The link takes you to the BERNINA website. The pattern is available to download free of charge during the month of January after you register for the BERNINA inspiration newsletter.

We think the shimmering metallic look bag brings a wonderful sparkle to everyday life, especially now when the days are cloudy and gray. What do you think?

Unzip the zip file containing the pattern

After downloading, you will have a zip file. In the extracted folder you will find:

  • Sewing instructions with information on materials, cutting out and sewing
  • A pattern in A4 format. You can print this out on your regular printer at home and stick the sheets together. Make sure you print out the pattern using the “original size” setting. Check the test square to make sure the pattern has been printed out in the correct size.

Please note that clicking the download button will automatically download the zip file to your computer. You will have to unzip it to access the PDF pattern. In Windows, you do this by right clicking on the file and clicking on the menu item “Extract all”. On a Mac, you can unzip zip files by double clicking the left mouse button.

Downloaded files are generally automatically put into the downloads folder, but this depends on the operating system, the device used and your local settings. If you download the file on your smartphone and cannot find the file or cannot unzip it, please try using a desktop computer.

Missed the download?

Do you want to sew the bag, but missed the download for the pattern? No problem! You can order the magazine as a single issue (including the printed pattern) from the shop and have it delivered to your home. Simply click on the following link:

We hope you have fun and good luck with your sewing!

Best wishes,

I have signed up for the newsletter but still cannot download the free pattern. It is 22nd January so we’ll within the month of January limit.  I just go round and round in circles asking me to subscribe to the newsletter.  I have already had confirmation of my subscription, being told “there is nothing more to do”.  I hope this is not a wrought just to get my details!

      Hello Margaret,
There seems to be a technical issue. I will send you the pattern directly via Mail.

      Best wishes, Ramona

I tried to sign up.  You asked for what was in my sewing room, so I put in the information on my Bernina 830 with the purchase date in 2012 & you rejected that.  Conclusion – I was unable to register

      Dear Miki,

Did you try to register your machine? Or did you want to sign up for the newsletter in order to get the pattern? Because for the later, no machine is necessairy, so I am a bit confused.

What are the seam allowances?  The pattern pieces say they are not included, but the instructions don’t provide them.

      Dear Sharen,

You can choose the seam allowance to be as wide as you want them. I am used to 1cm/ 0.4”, others to 1,5cm/ 0.6”.

I am also unable to download the free pattern. When I use the link to inspiration-freebie, it takes me to a page where I am asked to subscribe to the newsletter before I can download the free pattern, but I am already subscribed to the newsletter so I don’t receive any email. Is this free pattern only for new subscribers ?

        Hello Michele,
If you go to inspiration-freebie, there should be a button called “Register & Download for free”
Underneath should be a little link where you can download the pattern directly.

It took me getting out of the window and reopening another new window, reregistering, and finally I received the download.  For Bernina it really should be “easy peasy” as that is what you are trying to advertise to your customers.  This was NOT easy.  However;  Thank you for the pattern.  I appreciate it
