Getting creative with fabric scraps

Hi there! If you have read my other posts you will know that I love re purposing fabric scraps, up cycling old fabrics and making use of everything that I have left over from other sewing projects.

In this post I want to share with you a little mini quilt that I made over the weekend. I was inspired by a collection of different pink fabric scraps. I also had a nice piece of white denim so i started playing around with different ways to combine all the pink tones.

Materials and equipment:

  • Sewing machine (I used a Bernina 475QE)
  • Fabric scissors
  • Paper
  • Pen

The first thing that I did was to grab a piece of paper A3 size and a vivid pen.

I drew vertical lines and horizontal lines. I gave each segment a number to keep track of the sewing order.

I cut the different pieces which created  a pile of little pattern pieces.

I placed each piece on the fabric and cut around leaving 1 cm seam allowance all around.

I sewed all the pieces together. I pressed as I went along.

When all the panels were sewn I neatened the edges of each panel in order to have a straight line to sew the panels together :). To do this place a ruler and mark a staright line in each panel or you can also use the rotary cutter and a cutting mat.

The last step was to sew the panels together and press the seams to one side.

Because I love quilting I decided to use a polyester fluffy batting underneath and to hand sew a few running stitched over the pink panels.

The photo below is my final result. It measures 38 cm by 42 cm.

I am thinking of making it into a pillow cover, or cutting a love heart shape and use it as a patch at the back of a jacket… if you have an idea of what this little piece of re purposed fabrics can become please leave a comment and let me know 🙂

I hope you have enjoyed this little tutorial. If you enjoy simple little quilt projects check out this post on how to make a mini quilt in one day. It’s super easy as well and its made with naturally dyed silks.
