Hello dear readers! Today, I’d like to give you some more free sewing instructions for a small crib (the size is between a bassinet and a normal size crib). I have sewn a mattress sheet and a tie-on crib bumper. I hope you enjoy making them!
You will need:
For the crib sheet:
- Woven cotton fabric or jersey (organic quality): approx. 70 cm x 105 cm (depending on the size of the mattress)
- Thin elastic: 3 m – 4 m, depending on the perimeter of the mattress
- Safety pins
For the crib bumper:
- Cotton fabric (organic quality): approx. 3 m x 0.4 m (depending on the perimeter of the crib)
- H630 fusible fleece/ iron on-batting: approx. 3 m x 0.4 m (depending on the perimeter of the crib)
- Bias tape: 10 m – 13 m (or cut out of cotton fabric, does not have to be on the bias)
Sewing instructions for the crib sheet:
First, measure your mattress and make a note of the width, length and depth measurements. In my example, the measurements were 56 cm x 90 cm x 3.5 cm.
Now add 2 cm extra leeway to the width and length values on all sides. Then add the depth of the mattress (in my case, 3.5 cm) to the basic area, along with 3 cm for the threaded elastic edge, on all sides. In my example, this means that the overall size of the cut out fabric is 73 cm x 107 cm. Cut out the rectangle according to your measurements.
Now cut out squares from the corners. The measurements for each square are:
depth of the mattress (e.g. 3.5 cm) + 3 cm elastic edge = 6.5 cm in my example
The resulting edges of the square are then laid out on top of each other with the right sides facing and topstitched using an elastic stitch.
Now all that remains is to fold over the outside edges by 1.5 cm twice…
…and topstitch approx. 1.3 cm from the edge using an elastic stitch, leaving an opening of about 5 cm. Put a safety pin through each end of the elastic.
Push the elastic into the opening and thread it around the edge of the sheet through the tunnel. Once you come to the other side of the opening, distribute the sheet evenly around the elastic and pull the elastic to the desired tightness. Then stitch the two open ends of the elastic together (secure well!), remove the excess and slide the elastic into the opening. Close the opening by continuing around the seam. Your crib sheet is now finished!
Sewing instructions for the crib bumper:
First, measure the inside perimeter of your crib. Mine measures 2.60 m. It is up to you how tall you want your bumper. I chose 20 cm. Add seam allowances of 1 cm. In my case, this gives a strip 262 cm x 22 cm long. You will need two of these, one for the front and one for the back of your bumper.
The amount of fabric needed in my example is therefore 2 lengths of 262 cm x 22 cm, giving a total amount of fabric of 524 cm x 22 cm
As no fabric is 262 cm wide, you can piece them together (add another 1 cm seam allowance at each side to sew the pieces together). I sewed together two pieces of the same length each measuring 132 cm x 22 cm for each side. I ironed the seam allowances open on the back.
Then iron the fusible fleece onto the two pieced bumper strips. I also cut the bias tape out of cotton fabric. As it is not going to be used on any curved pieces, there is no need to cut it on the bias. I simply cut some 4 cm wide strips the same length as the fabric. The number of strips you need depends on the required number of ties.
In my example, I attached a tie at the top and bottom of the crib bumper every 20 cm. With a perimeter of 260 cm, I therefore need 13 ties for the top and 13 ties for the bottom of the bumper = 26 ties each 20 cm long.
I ironed over the two edges of the fabric strips 1 cm and then folded them in half and ironed them again. Then I folded each short edge over by 1 cm, folded up the tie…
…and topstitched around the edge.
Place the finished ties flush with the edge of one of the bumper strips and stitch in place. Position the first tie approx. 5 cm from the end of the bumper strip and then one every 20 cm – along both the top and the bottom edge of the bumper strip. In the photo, the ties are only attached on one side.
Place the second bumper strip on top with the right sides together and secure around the edge with fabric clips. Next, push any ties that are sticking out inside so you don’t accidentally sew over them.
Then sew around the edge of the two layers of fabric with a seam allowance of 1 cm. Leave one of the short sides open for turning.
Turn the bumper the right way out. Where the ties are sewn on, you can stitch vertically over the crib bumper again.
Fold the edges of the opening in 1 cm and secure in place.
Edgestitch along the opening.
Your crib is now finished 🙂
