You can make it by recycling old pieces of fabric that you may have at home or by upcycling old clothes that are worn out. For this tutorial I am using denim fabric which comes from a pair of old jeans. I have already made a tote bag from these old pants and now I am making a little make up  pouch πŸ™‚

Make up case Tutorial

For this tutorial you will need:

  • fabric for the make up case
  • fabric scraps for the applique
  • 1 zip (23 cm)
  • sewing machine
  • zipper foot
  • iron on fusible web

PATTERN:

For the denim pieces (exterior of make up case) you will need:

  1. 1 piece for the exterior back 25.5 cm by 15 cm
  2. 1 piece for the exterior front top 25.5 cm by 6.5 cm
  3. 1 piece for the exterior front bottom 25.5 cm by 10 cm

For the lining pieces you will need:

  1. 1 piece for the back lining 25.5 cm by 15 cm
  2. 1 piece for the front top lining 25.5 cm by 6.5 cm
  3. 1 piece for the front bottom lining 25.5 cm by 10 cm

Handle: 1 piece for the little handle 10 cm by 7.5

Step 1

  • Choose your fabrics.
  • Draw the pattern and cut the paper pieces
  • Cut your fabric pieces.

Place the front bottom exterior of your case on your working surface. Place zipper on top right sides touching.

Make sure that the zipper is centered in the fabric

Now grab the front bottom  lining.

Place it face down on top of the zip and sew the three layers in place.

This is how it should look πŸ™‚ Press with a hot iron.

Step 2

Repeat this process with the front top exterior

It should look like this. Press it with a hot iron.

Step 3 (optional)

I like to top stitch around the zipper and it also keeps the fabrics in place.

Open the zip and top stitch using a contrasting color thread.

It can be a bit tricky because of the metal zip but you can open and close the zip as you sew along to facilitate the process.

This is how it will look.

Step 4

This is my favorite part! You can totally do this before you even start the make up case but I wasn’t sure what fabric or design to use so I left it to this stage. You can do whatever feels best for you πŸ™‚

Using the iron on fusible sheets, draw a flower motif on the paper side of it. Fuse it to the wrong side of the fabric and cut around the fabric.

Place the individual pieces on the fabric to make sure that you are happy with the design.

Once you are happy with the design, remove the petals from the make up case and peel the paper backing from the petals.

Using a hot iron with no steam, fuse each piece to the denim fabric. Work in layers.

Once the flower is completely fused you can start stitching all around the flower design.

This is how it will look πŸ™‚

Step 5

If you haven’t cut the little handle you need to do it now.

Fold it in half and press firmly. Fold it in half again and press again.

Sew a straight line along the open edge of the handle.

Stitch to the top part of the front of the pouch as shown in the photo below.

Step 6

It’s time to finish this make up case. Place all the parts on your working table. The front is fully lined and you will still have the top back and the top lining to sew.

Unzip zipper halfway.

Place back lining rigth side up on the table, then place your front layer on top. The exterior needs to be facing up as well. Now place the back exterior on top of all layers facing down so the wrong side is facing you.

Pin in place and sew through all the layers on the top edge.

Bring the 2 exterior pieces together and sew along the bottom edge.

Bring the 2 lining pieces together and sew along the bottom edge leaving a 10 cm open gap to flip it inside out.

Sew along both sides of al layers. Trim seam allowances and clip the corners. Flip inside out through opening and then through the zipper opening.

Give it a good press. Don’t forget to sew the opening πŸ™‚
