How to sew a gift bag

Hi there! I am so excited to show you a super quick and easy way to make a fabric gift bag.

A little while ago I posted about creating a design on fabric using a free motion quilting foot.

In this post I want to show you how to use that design and turn it into a useful reusable gift bag.

Materials and Equipment:

  • Sewing machine (I use 475QE)
  • Fabric scraps
  • Fabric with detail
  • Fabric strips 7 cm in width
  • Cord

Step 1

Gather all your materials. For this tutorial I am using fabric scraps as well as the free motion quilt piece that I created in this tutorial

My quilted piece measures 20 cm by 28 cm. This will be my front piece for the bag.

Cut the back piece to the same size.

Cut the contrasting fabric strips to the width of the front and back pieces. Pin to the top edge.

Sew in place using a regular stitch.

Press seams open.

Step 2

Place your back and front pieces on your working table.

Place then one on top of the other right sides touching. Pin only one side and sew.

Fold the top side edges and sew an 8 cm line as shown in picture below.

Fold the strip in itself twice so that the raw edge is enclosed.

Pin in place.

Sew with a zig zag stitch from the outside.

This is how the inside will look once the zig zag is done.

You can now sew the rest of the bag by sewing a line starting at the 8 cm folded edge and sewing that side and the bottom of the bag.

The next and final step is to run a cord or tape through the opening using a safety pin.

Pull the string and close the bag by making a little bow 🙂
