The buff can be worn in many ways and is in fact a multifunctional cowl. Sew the buff on the overlock, I used the BERNINA L 460. You find more information about the machine in here.
What if you don’t have an overlock machine? No problem, any BERNINA sewing machine will do. Choose for a narrow zigzag stitch for the seams, this will make elastic seams.If you ‘d make this buff for children, you could change the fabric width to 50 or 55 cm, depending on the age of the child. If you doubt, take a larger size, you could always adjust.
Supplies to sew a buff
- A strip of heavy weight stretch stof (fleece or sweater fabric, with 2 right sides) 60 cm wide (seams included), about 23 cm high. It’s the red one in my buff.
- A strip of mid weight stretch fabric (think of t-shirt quality) of 60 cm wide, about 33 cm high.
- A piece of round elastic, 21 cm long. It will serve to close the buff as a hat, on top of the head.
- Matching threads Mettler Seralene is ideal overlock thread, if you don’t have the right colour for your buff, you could as well use Mettler Seralene sewing thread. voor de draad die naar de naalden gaat.
Preparation of the parts of the buff:
Overlock the longest side from red and brown fabric. Do this with the right side up. I think a wide (8mm) 4-thread stitch is nice. Take a short stitch length (1,75). Try differential feed out first, you will find out if you have to adjust MTC (micro thread control. If you have loops over the edge of the fabric, pull the MTC lever up (towards the -). If the fabric pulls together under the stitch, pull the MTC knob to the +.
Secure the threads at the beginning and at the end of the seam:
Sew a chain for 5 cm, then sew a few stitches on the fabric, lift the preserfoot (with the knee lift, also called the Free Hand System FHS). Take the chain that you have sewn and put it under the presserfoot towards you. When pulling the threads, you can make the chainstitch longer and overlock over the threads. They are caught in the new overlockstitch with the fabric.
At the end of the seam, you will turn your work over and sew back on the same seam for a few cm to secure the stitches, then cut off the threads and sew in by hand.
Sew the parts of the buff:
Pin both parts red and brown along the long edge, right sides together and overlock this seam. Secure stitches at the beginning and at the end. Take away pins before sewing over them…
Fold the fabric over to prepare for sewing the side seam. You will take the shortest side of the fabric and pin right sides together. You make a cylinder with the fabric.
Lay both overlocked seams to a different side, to avoid a thick seam.
Make a knot in both ends of the elastic. Put the elastic between both fabric layers (the knots at about 1/2 cm from one another). they come on the light weight stretch fabric, mine is brown) Lay it at about 2 cm away from the end of the fabric. You will sew the knots away with the machine, they prevent the elastic from slipping away.
Overlock this seam without cutting away fabric or thread in the previous sewn seam, secure stitches on both sides.
When I opened the buff, I saw that one end of the elastics wasn’t stitched well. As a solution I made a new knot and stitched it with the Button-sew-on foot # 18, So I used the sewing machine for a few stitches, allthough it wasn’t meant to.
