Sew a protective cloth cover in your own size

Sew a protective cloth cover in your own size for a non-standard garment or costume. Easy enough to find in standard sizes, but what about an extra large size, a paradecostume or a Santaclaus costume?

In this picture I used a large men’s coat as an example, but they will be used for other costumes, that’s why the cloth cover seems too big.

Supplies to sew a protective cloth cover in your own size:

  • A double sheet of see throug plastic, longer and wider than the garment it will be used for. Think of mattress protection. Ask friends or family or social media. Someone will be happy to get rid of the big plastic covers. Or ask a bedshop.
  • A long zipper (don’t sew over it, if it is a heavy one)
  • Biastape 4 cm wide
  • Binder attachment # 87
  • Mettler Seralon sewing thread in a matching colour
  • 2 labels to secure the zipper top and bottom

Sew a protective cloth cover in your own size:

Put the garment or costume on top of a double sheet of see through plastic. Draw the shape on the plastic. Add some space (like 5 cm) for the volume of the garment on both sides and bottom. There’s no extra space needed in the middle on top of the cover.

Cut out the shape in two layers.

Cut one in two from top to bottom.

Put the zipper on the back of one part and pin. I had a double-sided zipper. The zipper puller that will be on the front afterwards lays down on the table.

The zipper was taken out of a damaged tent. Read what we made of partytent plastic in the blogpost Recycle partytent to bags’.

Sew zipper and plastic together with a narrow zigzag stitch.

Sew with biastape:

Put the biastape in the binder 87 (check if there are seams in the tape, they should end on the inner side). I used the binder attachment in combination with the zipper foot. This is not a standard combination, but I did’nt want the presser foot to sew over the zipper. I set the needle position to -3. This is the extreme right position for the left side. If you’d set to -2, you’d hit the presser foot. Engage dual transport if it is on your machine. Pull the tape a few cm through the binder and start stitching. Then add the plastic in the binder.

Pull the wing of the binder attachment a little towards you when it hits the feed dog. They could be damaged.

Sew with a larger than standard stitch length, like 3.5 or 3.75, this looks great for a top stitch.

Repeat for the other half of the front for the protective cover.

It’s easy to swing away the arm of the binder attachment while sewing the zigzag stitch.

When you’ve finished both, you will find that they stand up, they still need a topstitch.

Edgestitch foot # 10 is the ideal foot to sew along the biastape on the right side of the cover. Fold the biastape towards the sides and topstitch.

Look how neat:

Finish the cloth cover:

Pin the finished upper part with the zipper on the other plastic sheet (wrong sides together). Cut the zipper to the same shape as the back part.

Sew together with a narrow zigzag stitch.

Continue with biastape along the edge. It’s smart to start in a corner, then you only have to go round one other corner.

At the end, you cut the biastape and fold over to insert in the binder attachment.
