I have been looking for ways to get my young daughter into sewing with my Bernina.
Easy projects that don’t require tidying up inside seams or ironing have worked really well and have been great for building her confidence and her sewing skills.
Last week we sat together and we made this cute little Easter bag using felted fabric sheets.
In this post I want to share with you how we did it so that you can also share your love of sewing with your little ones with this easy to make Easter bag 🙂
Materials and equipment
- Sewing machine (Bernina 475 QE)
- Felted fabric sheets
- Sewing thread
- Fabric scissors/Rotary cutter
- Cutting mat
Step 1:
Gather all the materials. this is the fun part in which the kids can choose the color fabrics that they want to use for their Easter bags!
We started with a 2 color bag but quickly decided to add some pink details to it.
Follow these measurements:
Cut 1 rectangle in green fabric : 13 cm by 30 cm
Cut 2 rectangles in blue fabric : 11.5 by 10.5 cm
Cut 2 rectangles in pink fabric: 13 cm by 4 cm
Cut 1 strip in green fabric: 2 cm by 30 cm
Step 2:
Place the pink fabric by the green base fabric. they need to measure exactly the same in width.
Using a black pencil or marker draw some wavy details on it.
Using the fabric scissors cut around the marked lines.
You will need 2 of these, one for each end of the green rectangle.
Cut little circles of felted fabric and place on top of the pink fabrics.
Attach the pink fabric to the base and sew the circles through both layers of fabric.
I sewed little crosses to attach the circles.
Step 3:
Place the 2 blue rectangles on the working surface.
Place the green rectangle right side facing down. Place the blue rectangle in the middle of the base green fabric as shown in picture below.
Sew the base of the blue rectangle to the green fabric.
When you reach the corner, lift the foot, clip the green fabric and pivot the blue fabric to meet the green one as shown in pictures below.
Continue sewing to the top of the blue fabric. This is one side of the basket.
Repeat the same process with the other side
Step 4:
Pin the green strip to the blue sides. This strip is the handle. Sew in place.
Here is a picture of the finished basket with a nice Easter Bunny inside. We made a few of these to give away to our friends. They all loved it! I hope you and your little ones love making these as well!
