BERNINA Corporate Blog -Shorts or a skirt? You can only actually tell the difference from the back! Today we want to sew the shorts “Rieke” from our magazine “inspiration” with you:
The pattern is available in sizes 36-46. We chose a patterned viscose fabric, which is perfect for hot summer days but still very elegant – especially when paired with a trendy blazer in a contrasting colour.
You can download the pattern for free until July 31, 2022 in the paragraph “Download the free sewing pattern for the “Rieke” shorts (July only)”. As always, you’ll have to be quick because each pattern is only available for free download in the month stated.

Sewing the shorts “Rieke”
The wide pleat in the front ensures a comfortable width and follows your every move.
The in-seam zip was inserted invisibly into the left side seam with the Invisible-zipper foot # 35. The graphic print emphasizes the modern style and makes the shorts a special eye-catcher.

The pattern and sewing instructions for the “Rieke” shorts appeared in the inspiration Magazine 62, featuring many inspiring projects for summer: an airy summer dress as shown below, a classy white blouse with buttons in the back, summer clothes for kids and many more.
Unfortunately, the issue 62 is now out of print. Maybe you are lucky and find it in a local sewing store! You can still buy some of the patterns and other issues of the inspiration Magazine online or have them conveniently delivered to your home.
Download the free sewing pattern for the “Rieke” shorts (July 2022 only)

The link takes you to the BERNINA website. The pattern is available for free download during the month of July once you register for the BERNINA inspiration newsletter.
Unzip the zip file containing the pattern
After downloading, you will have a zip file. In the extracted folder you will find:
- Sewing instructions with information on materials, cutting out and sewing
- A pattern in A4 format. You can print this out on your regular printer at home and stick the sheets together. Make sure you print out the pattern using the “original size” setting. Check the test square to make sure the pattern has been printed out in the correct size.
Please note that clicking the download button will automatically download the zip file to your computer. You will have to unzip it to access the PDF pattern. In Windows, you do this by right clicking on the file and clicking on the menu item “Extract all”. On a Mac, you can unzip zip files by double clicking the left mouse button.
Downloaded files are generally automatically put into the downloads folder, but this depends on the operating system, the device used and your local settings. If you download the file on your smartphone and cannot find the file or cannot unzip it, please try using a desktop computer.

I wonder if I could lengthen these to knee length and have it still look like a front box pleated skirt. I’m particularly modest with my legs and prefer not to show above the knee unless I’m swimming.
