Free sewing pattern for the Shirt “Sue” (August only)

Airy, elegant and one of a kind – Today we want to sew the shirt “Sue” from our magazine “inspiration” with you:

For this shirt, you’ll need a lace fabric with a scalloped edge. Sewing with lace can be challenging, so you will find helpful tips on how to handle the sewing allowance in the pattern instructions. Finishing the sewing allowance with a fitting method will make sure your gorgeous new shirt will last.

You can download the pattern and instructions for free until August 31, 2022 in the paragraph “Download the free sewing pattern for the “Sue” shirt (August only)”. As always, you’ll have to be quick because each pattern is only available for free download in the month stated.

Missed the free download?

Are you too late, but you still really want to sew the shirt? You can buy the pattern in the “inspiration” online shop at the following link:

You can find the link to download this month’s pattern for free further below.

Sewing the shirt “Sue”

With lace fabrics, you can see the seams from the outside as well, which is why particular care is warranted here.

To ensure a nice and clean look and to prevent fraying, we used binding to finish our sewing allowance on the inside (as shown in the next picture). You will find tips for 3 different binding methods in the pattern instructions.

The different fabric thicknesses and stretch in different parts (even of the same fabric) require the use of the Walking Foot #50 or the Dual feed ( BERNINA 7 and 8 Series ).

To improve the feed, particularly on corners and edges, water-soluble stabiliser is placed below the lace fabric. The stabiliser is simply sewn too, then carefully torn away or dissolved in water.

Buttons and buttonholes on lace fabric should be avoided. In their place, we sewed on a button tape from fine cotton fabric.

Take a look at the magazine…

The pattern and sewing instructions for the “Sue” shirt appeared in the inspiration Magazine 62, featuring many inspiring projects for summer: an airy summer dress as shown below, a classy white blouse with buttons in the back, summer clothes for kids and many more.

Unfortunately, the issue 62 is now out of print. Maybe you are lucky and find it in a local sewing store! You can still buy some of the patterns and other issues of the inspiration Magazine online or have them conveniently delivered to your home.

Unzip the zip file containing the pattern

After downloading, you will have a zip file. In the extracted folder you will find:

  • Sewing instructions with information on materials, cutting out and sewing
  • A pattern in A4 format. You can print this out on your regular printer at home and stick the sheets together. Make sure you print out the pattern using the “original size” setting. Check the test square to make sure the pattern has been printed out in the correct size.

Please note that clicking the download button will automatically download the zip file to your computer. You will have to unzip it to access the PDF pattern. In Windows, you do this by right clicking on the file and clicking on the menu item “Extract all”. On a Mac, you can unzip zip files by double clicking the left mouse button.

Downloaded files are generally automatically put into the downloads folder, but this depends on the operating system, the device used and your local settings. If you download the file on your smartphone and cannot find the file or cannot unzip it, please try using a desktop computer.

I have already registered, but cannot download the “Sue” shirt pattern, as system is advising to register to download and there is no where to bypass this section. It is still August, so can I have an explanation why won’t it download, please.

      Dear Elizabeth,

I cannot find you in the system, so my guess is that the registration process is not yet complete. Have you recieved a confirmation email and clicked the button in the mail? The registration is only valid if you confirm your subscription in the e-Mail. You might want to check the spam folder to make sure it did not end up there.

If you did not recieve a confirmation email, but would like to register for the inspiration Magazine, I can add you to the system manually. Let me know! 🙂 I can also send you the pattern directly or you can use the “Download the pattern and sewing instructions for free without subscribing to the newsletter” Link beneath the register button of the monthly free pattern page to bypass the registration.

Let me know if I can further assist you.

Kind regards, Ramona from BERNINA International

        Dear Cynthia,
I am guessing that the download has worked for you, but only the opening of the file is an issue?
There is a section at almost the end of the Blog Post titled “Unzip the zip file containing the pattern”. You can find a short description how to extract the files from the .zip file so you can open them. Hope that helps! 🙂
