Sew a mini case for earplugs or keys, it is comfortable to have them nearby.
I was at Festival Dranouter. Yes, it’s the festival where I went with my BERNINA sewing machine to sew for a recycling project. Read the blogposts about ‘Mestival’ here.
I missed a mini case for my earplugs, so I started to make one. It will be useful for concerts and dance parties as well.
My sewing machine is the BERNINA 710
This is a project only made with presserfoot Edgestitch Foot #10.
Note:
Supplies you need to sew a mini case for earplugs or keys:
- 2 patches of faux leather, about 13 x 13 cm.
- 15 cm non fringing tape
- Small plastic zipper
- Mettler Seralon cordonnet 30
- 2 key rings, a musketon or carabine hook
- A rotary cutter is useful.
- A metal or plastic lid, about 9 cm.
- Fabric glue to secure the cut thread ends.
- Mettler Web Bond temporary adhesive spray instead of pinning
Preparation to sew the mini case:
Cut one of the patches faux leather in 2, to sew the zipper in.
Sew the zipper in the front part:
Spray temporary adhesive spray on the zipper and put the patches of faux leather on it, right side up.
Sew with a longer stitch length, set to 4, 25, to sew the faux leather to the zipper.
Sew the tape to a loop. Even this seam is sewn with the edgestitch foot on the machine. I set the needle position to the far left and zigzagged over the edge.
Sew the mini case:
Put both patches together, with the tape in between. Check if the seam in the tape will be on the inside of the case, when finished.
Use the lid as a shape to sew around.
While sewing, I noticed the lid was gliding away on the slippery faux leather. Next time I will turn it upside down and use temporary adhesive spray to prevent from sliding.
Check the selected stitch on a side corner, before topstitching. If you use cordonnet thread, you might have to increase tension.
I even kept the edgestitch foot on the machine to sew the circle, with these settings::
It’s useful to pin the corners of the faux leather.
Finish the mini case:
Cut the case along the stitched circle. Secure loose thread ends with the fabric glue.
Add the key rings.
Use it as a key hanger:
Do you have other funny purposes for small patches of faux leather?
