Sew circles in december? Christmas ornaments of course!

My first tip: take a heavy weight fabric, take several layers if possible. Faux leather is ideal.

The supplies you will need:

  • For each ornament 4 10 x 10 cm patches.
  • Gold tape or metallic thread
  • The circular embroidery attachment 83
  • Mettler Silk Finish cotton thread (slightly thicker, gives more effect) in a contrasting Christmas colour.
  • Open Embroidery Foot #20 is very helpful to have a good view on your work.

Start to sew with the circular embroidery attachment:

Put the 4 patches of fabric on top of each other with one right side on top and one right side on the bottom.

Attach them to the circular embroidery attachment, with the metal pin in the middle.

If you start sewing with the pin placed to the far right side, you should thread the needle before starting. Or remove the pin with the fabric to the left for threading.

Fix the attachment to the machine with the screw you find in the box.

I choose a decorative cross stitch with these settings:

Take a long thread tail for the start and finish of the stitch. It can be useful to finish the stitches if start and stop don’t meet in an exact point. Take the bobbin thread to the top for the start and prevent it to make a nest on the back side of your work.

Now start to sew the chosen decorative stitch.

Don’t forget to put the hanger between the fabric layers. Push the knot away from the area where you will sew.

When you arrive at the start of your circle, it’s finished.

I had a small opening when stopping the last cross stitch and finished it by handsewing instead of sewing over the first stitches again.

I liked it so far and wanted to try a new ornament.

This is the next decorative stitch I have chosen, with these settings:

When finishing the first circle, I sewed a second one.

A second tip: choose for a longer hanger if you sew several rounds of stitches.

Cut out the Christmas ornament (don’t cut the hanger). It’s a fun project to use small patches and you have a nice effect for Christmas ornaments with the circular embroidery attachment 83 Bernina
