Concealed slit with lining ‒ Preparations

The rear centre seams above the slit in the lining or the pleat for ease are topstitched (approx. 5 cm) and the outer fabric is closed, the allowances are ironed apart, and the hems are finished. In the illustrations, the dark side is the right side of the fabric, the light side is the inside and the other coloured fabric is the lining.

Step-by-step sewing instructions

Cut across the seam allowance of the right side above the slit mark up to the centre back. Cut back the overlap (in the illustration below) to facing width plus allowance. Iron the underlap along the fold to the back. Sew the upper edges of the slit on top of each other.

On the lining, cut open the fabric of the pleat of ease from the bottom up to the end of the slit. Place the seam ends of the rear centre seams of the lining and outer fabric wrong side on wrong side on top of each other. Push the lining 0.5 to 1 cm further up, then pin it. Pin the long edge of the lining right side on right side on the underlap as an extension of the seam. Cut off the lining of the overlap side up to 1 cm beyond the bottom edge of the underlap. Clip the seam allowance of the lining 1 cm diagonally at the upper corner.

Pin the lining to the upper horizontal seam and continuously along the side of overlap. Pull out the side of the underlap, reposition the pins so that you can sew on the lining with the machine.  Stitch the lining horizontally from the hem and at the top. Sew the lining on the overlap side also from below, making sure that the horizontal seams meet.

Align the slit exactly on top of each other and fix it with a diagonal stitch line from the right side of the fabric.
