Start to patchwork with foot 97

Start to patchwork with foot 97D, for practical sewing. This foot is built to sew accurate seams. In January 2023 it is the presser foot of the month, so there is a nice discount, ask your dealer.

This blogpost helps you to start, the finishing will  be mentioned in a new blogpost.

I already made some patchwork quilts and I like to sew quick and neat. Thats why I think #patchworkfoot 97 is my ideal helper. I use the D version, which means it it built to use with dual transport.

Make this project as a remembrance quilt, with shirts from someone who passed away, or from your children. I started with a spotted shirt from my husband and found 2 other in a thrift shop.

Supplies for an easy patchwork project:

  • 3 shirts in a matching fabric, a contrasting left over piece of fabric. I cut the squares in size 15 x 15 cm, seams included for a quilt with 6 x 9 squares.
  • Mettler Seralon sewing thread
  • biastape in a matching color
  • batting
  • Extra fabric in the size of your project, to cover the back (take 2)
  • Patchwork Foot #97  and Straight- and CutWork Stitch Plate
  • heat erasable pen
  • rotary knife, mat and ruler are very interesting!

Why is foot #97D so interesting?

Let’s take a closer look at the foot.

There are some interesting sizes and notches to help you for accurate seams. The 1/4″ size is 6 mm. You can find these notches on the left and on the right of the foot.  I want to have a 7mm seam allowance and I guide along the back right side of the foot, it’s a little wider there.

The foot comes with a guide, to help you for the right seam allowance.

Fix the guide to the machine with the screw.

For a 9 mm machine, you install the guide on the right of the feed dogs, that will make a 1 cm seam allowance.

Start with the patchwork with foot #97D:

Cut squartes from the shirts, size 15 x 15 cm. Start with the sleeves and a front panel. If you want to add a border after finishing, you can still use the back to cut stripes.

Arrange the squares to take a look at the final view.

Mark with the heat erasable pen. Or take a picture to remember your puzzle.

Sew the patches together, with the duale transport engaged. The numbers are very useful to reconstruct the line.

Sew per 2 squares, secure stitches in the beginning and at the end of every seam, but don’t cut the threads. Just sew on to the next pair of squares.
Take your time to finish all lines and iron the seams open.
Don’t forget to choose the straight stitch plate in the settings of the machine. It is marked with the slot above the stitching information.

Start with patchwork with foor 97 or 97D as a beginnersproject. This foot helps you with accurate seams. I’ll finish the remembrance quilt in a next blogpost. I hope you enjoy to make this quilt.

You are mixing your measurements, inches  /  centimetres. Please use one or the other to avoid confusion.

Hi Margaret, I’m sorry if you find it confusing. The picture I had was in inches, and so much information and patterns in patchwork are in inches. Besides this, European sewists are used to centimeters, and I hear many US sewists start to like millimeters too, as it is more accurate. I hope conversion is not a huge problem.
