The sustainable sewing-challenge #REFEBULOUS is back!

In (less than) a week, the #REFEBULOUS sewing challenge will start again. It is the fourth year in a row that you can participate in this sustainable sewing-challenge on Instagram.

The format is pretty much the same as last year, let’s say recycled. You can read more about the challenge in this blogpost.

A little reminder: What is REFEBULOUS?

REFEBULOUS is a sustainable sewing challenge. The challenge’s mission is to encourage and inspire each other to repair, refashion and reuse clothes. Use fabric in a different way. Embellish, embroider, paint, etc. In other words, make something REFEBULOUS again

This year, there are again three categories in which your creativity can be challenged. These categories are:

Repair

Repair your garment! Put on your mending hat and start mending that beloved garment. Or finally make that second-hand garment fit. Use special techniques to repair something and share it.

Now it fits!

Repair

Refashion

Create a new design! Create a new garment by using old clothes. Either second-hand, gifted or found in your own wardrobe. Create something different from what it was. Try to think out of the box.

Reuse

Re-use materials! Reuse clothes, pieces of fabric (such as curtains, sheets, towels and scraps) or other materials to make a project. Think of home decoration, utensils, soft toys, garments, etc.

How it works

The sewing challenge starts on February first. Joining the challenge is relatively easy! All you have to do is post on Instagram with the hashtag #REFEBULOUS2023. Share at least one grid post of your sewing process with a (carousel of) photos, videos or even a Reels within the theme of the week. Do you participate every week? Nice. You will then have an extra chance to win one of the sustainable prizes. Choose multiple categories to participate in. Wow, even more chances.

Week 1: 1 – 5 February

Share your plan(s), inspiration and the materials you will use.

Week 2: 6 – 12 February

Share the process so far, what have you learned, share what you have tried and what of this succeeded or perhaps failed.

Week 3: 13 – 19 February

Share who is doing all the work. This week is all about you working on the project. If you prefer not to photograph yourself, show where the magic happens or photograph your hands while you do the work.

Week 4+: 20 – 28 February

Wear or show your completed project, post a before and after picture and/or a sneak peek if you didn’t manage to finish it completely.

The prizes

To make the challenge even more interesting for you as a participant, sponsors have made some beautiful and sustainable prizes available . BERNINA is one of the sponsors. If you take part in the challenge, you will have a chance of winning 1 of 10 digital subscriptions to the Inspiration Magazine for the duration of one year. How cool!

Other prizes include a pdf pattern (of choice), deadstock or sustainable fabric and recycled threads from Mettler. Winners will be chosen (at random) at the end of the month. Anyone who has used the hashtag #REFEBULOUS2023 is eligible to win. The challenge is international.

I’m looking forward to it again! Don’t want to miss anything from the challenge? Then follow me and/or #REFEBULOUS2023 on Instagram. That way you’ll be ready for the start of the sewing challenge!

Love,
