Bow ties are really hot! You make them yourself with this free pattern. Find a cute fabric and sew a bow tie for Father’s Day. The sewing level is marked as ‘Intermediate’ because turning and adding the tape in the middle takes some skills. It’s interesting to sew a first test before you start the real thing. If you think the strap is too narrow for your fabric, cut the fabric a little wider.
What do you need to sew a bow tie:
- 17 cm of full fabric width (at least 114 cm wide)
- 57 x 17 cm iron on stabilizer
- The pattern, free download: Strik – Bow tie
- Mettler Seralon sewing thread in amatching colour
- 3 small buttons
- Your BERNINA sewing machine
Cut out the pattern parts and connect the parts.
Iron the stabilizer on the wrong side of the fabric (57 cm wide after folding).
Pin the pattern to the fabric.
I used the Open Embroidery Foot #20 for a good view on the sewing area, to sew along the outline of the pattern parts. Don’t forget to leave a hole to turn the parts. Take about 10 cm, they are marked in orange on the pictue.
Cut ou the fabric (take a 1 cm seam allowance besides the turning hole and 0,5 for the rest) and iron the seams.
Cut the seam on both sides of the bow, and cut off the corners.
Turn the bow tie inside out.
Close the hole with a handstitch.
Fold both ending parts to the right side and connect with a zigzag stitch.
Fold both front parts to the front and sew the back parts to the bow tie (so you sew where the pins are).
Cut a 6 cm wide stripe from the rest of the fabric. Fold over and sew a seam (right side out).
Fold open and iron. Cut the seam to a 0,5 cm.
Fold this stripe over the middle of the bow tie with a handstitch. Pins will help you to keep it in place. Be sure to check if the front looks OK.
Finish the bow tie with buttons:
Make the buttonholes on one end.
Cut open with the Buttonhole Cutter with Wooden Block.
Sew on the buttons with Button Sew-On Foot #18. Did you know you can adjust the heighth of the middle iron part? Just turn the screw to change heighth.
The bow tie is finished.
The nicest gift for Father’s Day is ready.
