We’re starting the Between the Lines quilt along. I’m so excited about it. It takes me right back to the first Sugaridoo BERNINA QAL. Making a quilt together, learning different techniques, with quilters from all over the world. This QAL is definitely going to be another fun quilting adventure!
In this blog post, you can read:
- what we’re going to do,
- if this QAL is for you,
- what you’ll need,
- when everything will take place,
- and what you can win by participating.
Are you ready? Let’s get started!
What are we making?
The Between the Lines QAL is a quilt measuring 55 x 66 inches (137 x 165cm). The quilt is divided into 9 rows. Starting from June 6th, we’ll be working on a new row every four weeks. We won’t work from top to bottom but rather increase in difficulty. So, it’s always a surprise which row we’ll be working on next.
The techniques involved include foundation paper piecing, quarter circles, strip piecing, and regular piecing.
Is this QAL for you?
All techniques used in the rows will be explained from start to finish on the BERNINA blog and in videos. Some quilting experience is helpful for this QAL, as it makes it a bit easier to keep up.
Are you a beginner who enjoys a challenge? Then this QAL is for you too. There’s plenty of room for your questions. In past QALs, it’s been shown that a very nice community forms on Facebook where quilters are happy to help each other. Sign up for the Sugaridoo Facebook group to be part of that community.
We’ll make one row every four weeks. Some rows will be quicker to make than others. If you plan for one evening per week, you’ll be able to keep up with the QAL.
Free patterns and video tutorials
Participating in the quilt along is completely free. Every four weeks, you’ll find the written instructions here on the BERNINA blog, including the patterns associated with it.
For each row, I’ll demonstrate in a live video on YouTube how it’s made. During these videos, you can ask all your questions. And of course, you can watch them later if you can’t be there live.
Are you joining use?
Want to join the QAL? Awesome! You can sign up (for free) to receive an email every 4 weeks with all the links and information.
Through these emails, I’ll send you the links to the blog posts, invitations to the live videos, and keep you updated on the various giveaways during the quilt along.

Materials
What do you need for this quilt along? Here’s a list of all the tools I used to make this quilt besides the BERNINA 770 QE.
- Cutting mat
- Rotary cutter
- Inch ruler. I use a 6 x 24 and a 6 x 12 inch ruler. No problem if you have one in a slightly different size.
- Paper scissors
- Fabric scissors
- Pins
- Thread (in the color of the background fabric)
- For foundation paper piecing, I use an add-a-quarter ruler, tea bag paper, and freezer paper. Tea bag paper is my favorite paper for foundation paper piecing.
Fabrics + Fabric bundles
For the fabrics, I’ve come up with two options. Of course, a cheerful rainbow, but also a fresh blue-green quilt. Here’s what you need to make these quilts.
Rainbow
- 16 fat quarters in rainbow colors
- 4 x pink
- 4 x orange/yellow
- 4 x green
- 4 x teal/blue
- 2 fat quarters accent fabric (grey)
- 4,5 meter (5 yards) background fabric
Blue-green
- 8 half meters
- 4 x green
- 4 x teal/blue
- 2 fat quarters accent fabric (grey)
- 4,5 meter (5 yards) background fabric
Fabric bundles
The Between the Lines QAL is designed with the first Sugaridoo fabric line. The fabrics from the Robo Boogie collection by Benartex are now available in stores. For this Quilt Along, you can participate with one of the two bundles. Of course, you can also participate with your own fabrics.

Irene
Hi I can’t find the templates!!!!! Kind regards from sunny Switzerland
Hi Monika,
The templates are in each part of the quilt-along! Click here to go to an overview of all parts which are currently published. Also, with some rows she does not have templates since you only need to cut squares or rectangles.
Sounds interesting. No fabric photo. Mine will be scrappy. Will be pulling from my fabric stash as we go along. I like the idea of this QAL method, “Between the Lines”, similar to the row by row method. Some of the rows you choose sound challenging.
Thank you all for sharing your fabric selections and entering the raffle. We picked three winners, congratulation to all of you! The winners are: Tess from Belgium, Terri from Canada and Katja from Germany. The winners have been contacted.
I’m too late for the Mettler thread drawing (bummer, but I hope someone who really needs it wins); but I’m still excited for this between the lines QAL. I’m going to use the Tula Pink Tiny Beasts fabric bundle I bought last year.
I am so excited about this QAL! I shopped my stash and am ready to go. Does the 5 yards of background fabric include backing?
Yay, great to hear you’re joining! No the 5 yard is for the background. You will need extra fabric for the backing.
Hi I’ve only got a Bernina 530-2 Record machine, so would this be suitable to sew this QAL?
Hi Sibylle, when you know how to sew straight lines with your sewing machine you are all set to join! Maybe you can watch this video from the first Sugaridoo x BERNINA QAL and try to sew 1/4″ seams on you machine, we will be using that a lot.
Quick question Irene & Bernina,Is it ok to use our own stash and add other colours? Would I still be able to enter the Giveaways if it’s not got the same coloured rows?
I have done Irene’s Sugaridoo quilt alongs before, and you can definitely use your own fabrics! Have fun chosing your colours… I plan to use my stash as well :). I’m @harbourcolour on instagram and I will post a photo of my fabrics soon!
Hi Ippy and Laurie, thank you for sharing. Yes indeed, you can use any fabrics you like. Can’t wait to see what fabrics you’ll both pick!
That’s great. Thank you.
