Between the Lines QAL: Into the Mountains Pillow

Surprise! During the Between the Lines QAL, I will share a few bonus projects with you. Today the first one, a pillow based on row 9, Into the Mountains.

Between the Lines QAL

This pattern is part of the quilt along that we started on June 6, Between the Lines. In this blog post, you can read all about the QAL.

We make a row of the quilt every four weeks, so you can definitely join and participate in the quilt along.

Would you like to order a kit with all the materials for this quilt? Then order a Rainbow kit or a Green-Teal kit in the Sugaridoo webshop.

Bonus project – Into the Mountains pillow

As a bonus during the quilt along, I will share a few bonus projects. These match the quilt.

In this blog post, you will find the necessary materials, the pattern, and the instructions to make a pillow matching row 9, Into the Mountains.

Materials

For this pillow, you will need the following. Please note that these materials are not included in the QAL fabric kit. This fabric is available separately in the Sugaridoo webshop, while supplies last.

  • 15″ x Width Of Fabric: Light pink with robots
  • 1 fat eighth: Dark pink with triangles
  • 50cm x WOF: Background fabric
  • 22 x 22″ inch: Backing fabric (this fabric goes on the inside of the pillow)
  • 30″ x WOF: Pillow backing fabric
  • 22 x 22″ and 30 x 22″: Batting (30 x 22″ is optional, see ‘Quilting the Pillow’)
  • 10″ x WOF: Binding

Cutting

Let’s start making the pillow!

These are the different shapes that appear in the pillow.

You will need the following for the front of the pillow.

  • Background fabric
    • 49 x piece a
    • 49 x piece b
    • 2 x strip of 1 3/4 x 20 1/2 inch
    • 2 x strip of 1 3/4 x 18 inch
  • Light pink with robots
    • 37 x piece c
  • Dark pink with triangles
    • 2 x piece c
    • 5 x piece d

Pattern

We use the same pattern for this pillow as for the Into the Mountains row.

Click here to download the pattern.

Sections A and C are 2 1/2 x 7 1/2 inch (3 x 8 inch incl. seam allowance).

Sections B and D consist of a part of 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch (3 x 3 incl. seam allowance) and a part of 2 1/2 x 5 inch (3 x 5 1/2 inch incl. seam allowance).

In the illustration below, you can see which fabric is used in which sections. Of course, you can also play with this and come up with your own layout for this pillow.

Make each section this many times:

  • 3 x section A
  • 2 x section B (complete)
  • 7 x section B (small piece)
  • 8 x section C
  • 1 x section D

Foundation Paper Piecing

In the live video on July 5th, I showed how to sew the sections for this row. You can use the same technique to make the sections of this pillow.

Assembling the Quilt Top

Sew all the sections together. I first sewed the sections vertically, then joined all the vertical rows together.

Then you can sew the 1 3/4 x 18 inch strips to the sides and the 1 3/4 x 20 1/2 inch strips to the top and bottom.

Quilting the Pillow

Now we are going to quilt the front and the two back pieces of the pillow.

Q16 and the ruler foot

I love using the BERNINA Q 16 for these kind of projects. They are a perfect size to easily move under your machine, so a great practice project for your quilting.

For this project I used a straight ruler and the Adjustable Ruler Foot with Slit #72S

Front

Make a sandwich with the quilt top, the 22 x 22″ batting, and the 22 x 22″ backing.

I quilted this by following the pink shapes. By only quilting in the background, the triangles and diamonds stand out more.

Back

For the back of the pillow, I quilted the 30″ x fabric width piece without batting. If you want to give your pillow more body, you can place 30 x 22″ batting in the fabric before quilting.

You can now quilt this as you like. Straight lines, meandering, triangles, anything goes.

Assembling the Pillow

The only thing left to do now is to cut the pieces to size and assemble them with a binding around the edges.

  • Cut the front of the pillow to 20 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch.
  • Cut two back pieces of 20 1/2 x 12 1/2 inch.

Preparing the Binding

Cut strips for the binding to 2 1/2 inches wide. For the back pieces, you need two strips of 20 1/2 inches long. For the front, you need 3 strips of the fabric width.

Sew the strips for the front together into one long strip.

Then fold and press all the strips in half.

Back

Sew one short binding to each back piece. Place the open side of the binding against the long edge of the back piece, sew 1/4 inch from the edge. Fold the binding over the edge and sew it down along the edge of the front.

Front

Place the front of the pillow face down.

Place the back pieces on top, with the binding in the middle as shown in the picture below.

Pin around and sew slightly less than 1/4 inch from the edge to secure everything.

Now sew the binding around the front of the pillow. Fold the binding to the back and sew around again to secure the binding. I like to use the Edgestitch Foot #10 for this.
