Simple drawing motifs are always stylish. They are available as picture prints, wire motifs, fabric prints and much more. Today I’m going to show you how to sew a cushion with cords in a sketch design. I have also decorated an old embroidery hoop with a simple cat design as an alternative to the one I chose for this cushion.
My little helper
With the help of the Piping Foot #38 from BERNINA, such cord designs can be embroidered onto fabric in no time at all.
This accessory is often referred to as the “uneven presser foot” as it has unevenly high soles. This makes it ideal for sewing narrow to medium piping, cords and uneven layers of fabric. Here’s a little video of sewing piping or hook-and-loop tape with the Piping Foot #38:
Cushion with cords in a sketch design – the choice of motif
Pinterest has numerous motifs in a similar style that can be used as templates. Download one you like, print it, and place the print onto your fabric. I secured it with tape so the design does not shift while transfering it onto my fabric. In the spirit of upcycling, I used an old cushion cover and an embroidery hoop for this project.
Don’t have an old cushion?
The BERNINA Blog has a huge variety of instructions for cushion and pillow cases. Go take a look!
Transfer the design onto the fabric
There are various ways to do this. I would like to show you two of them in more detail.
For the first option, I used a chalk pen with a cogwheel. This is available from Prym, for example. I traced the motif with a lot of pressure. This creates holes in the paper through which the chalk is transferred to the fabric.
2. With the second method I cut out the motif beforehand and traced it on with a trick marker, which is also available from Prym.
If you know any other possibilities, please leave them in the comments. 🙂
Now attach the Piping Foot #38 to the machine.
How to sew the cushion with cords
Place the cord or piping under the higher side, flush with the edge of the thick left foot sole so that the needle can grip the edge perfectly. Slowly sew the cord in place along the drawn motif. I chose a stitch length of 3.2 mm. Tie the cord at the beginning and end so that the motif cannot come loose. And the cushion with cord detail is finished!
And here is the cat design in an old embroidery hoop.
This also looks very nice on T-shirts or bags.
Perhaps you have other ideas for what a cord motif could look great on? If so, just write in the comment!
