Easy Kids Jumper Sewing Pattern

I always struggle to find my little girls light, breezy summer clothes.. until I found this cute jumper pattern.

It’s works for all sorts of fabrics and it’s relatively fast and easy! No zippers, button holes, or other more intermediate skills.

The Robin jumper will be free for the month of August, so make sure to go and download it before the month ends. You can find it here: Free sewing pattern for the jumpsuit “Robin” (August 2024 only)

I wanted to share a bit more of the process making this jumper.

If you’re new to garment-making, I know it can be intimidating to start a new project without photo/video guidance, so I hope this will help as you make the pattern.

Let’s get started!

You’ll need:

  • 1 button
  • enough fabric for the pattern pieces (waffle, double gauze, cotton, I used thrifted gingham sheets)
  • the pattern pieces printed and attached together (I sewed mine together!)

That’s it!

Getting Started

This pattern does not include a seam allowance, which means when you’re cutting out the pattern pieces from the fabric, make sure to add 3/8″ – 1/2″ seam around the perimeter.
An easy trick is to grab a few magnets and attach them to the sides of your scissors, it helps as a guide and reminder to leave that seam allowance.

Once your pattern pieces are cut out from the fabric, making sure that directional fabrics are facing the correct orientation, we’ll start assembly.

Bodice Assembly

The top is easier than you think, start by sewing your back pieces together, leaving a section at the top unsewn (there will be a mark on the pattern).

I tend to finish my seams as I go, but you can finish them at the end as well. Iron the seams open, including the unsewn top.

Create a little loop for the button, I folded over a tiny bit of fabric to create mini double tape. You can also use a ribbon or string.

Pin the loop in place so that the seam will be hidden from the right side.

Sew down each seam allowance, you can sew all the way down or just around the top seams creating a box around the open top part. This should “lock” the loop in place.

Attach the back with the front piece at the shoulders right sides together.

Pin your bias tape around the neckline and arms.

Make sure you leave tails on both ends of the neckline, you’ll need these to fold into themselves during finishing. Sew in place.

Iron in half to create double fold bias tape, sew in place.

For the ends, fold in the edges and then sew down.

Sew the sides of the bodice together. It’s completed!

Pants Assembly

Sew the front pants together on the top part.

Repeat for the back pants. Finish your seams if you’d like, but I found it easier to do at this step.

Sew the sides and inner legs of the pants together.

Jumper Assembly

To make this easier, I probably should have sewn two seams across the top of the pants to create a gather (long stitch, pull both threads to create gathers, move them to make it even).

Instead I just winged it and kinda pushed the pants top into gathers and pinned the bodice right sides together.

Heart Pockets

The cutest little step, sew the sets of hearts right sides together leaving a turning hole, trim the seam allowance, and flip. Iron flat, tucking the hole fabric into the heart.

Hold up your jumper and line up your hearts evenly. Sew the sides of the heart pockets in place (I definitely had to wrestle this on my machine!) with a narrow seam allowance.

Sew your button in place where the button loop overlaps on the back of the bodice.

Your cute jumper is complete! I had so much fun making this, it was a really relaxing project that didn’t take too long and is really forgiving.

I can’t wait to see yours! Tag @quiltdstudios on social media so I can see your beautiful jumpers 🙂
