It was a BIG DAY when we got a special visit by Petra Donath, senior customer experinence manager at Schmetz, who manufacture the BERNINA sewing needles and are known for their high-quality! They showcased their extended range at an event at BERNINA headquarters in Steckborn. Employees from various departments—Creative Center, Testing Facilities, Engineering, Education, and Marketing—joined in to check out the unique features of these sewing needle types. We are thrilled to share our highlights with you and we will also give away some of the featured needles!
Compatibility with BERNINA Machines
Please note that although Schmetz offers a wide range of options, not every Schmetz needle is compatible with BERNINA machines. Most BERNINA machines use the 130/705 needle system. To get the best performance and avoid any issues, be sure to check your BERNINA machine’s needle system before trying out a new needle. This way, you’ll pick the right type that matches your machine’s specs, letting you dive into your projects with confidence and precision. And don’t forget, choosing the right needle can really enhance your sewing experience! For more info about how to choose the right needle and why the different needle point tips matter, check out the following article: The right needle is essential.
Identifying High Quality in machine sewing needles
When it comes to selecting sewing needles, distinguishing between low and high-quality options is crucial for achieving the best results in your projects. High-quality machine sewing needles such as BERNINA and Schmetz generally have a smooth shaft, which reduces friction as you sew, allowing for smoother fabric manipulation and fewer skipped stitches. Look for needles that are well-finished with no burrs or rough edges—this not only enhances performance but also prolongs the life of both the needle and your sewing machine.
Another hallmark of quality is the needle’s tip; a sharp, precision tip allows for effortless penetration into the fabric, while a dull or poorly shaped tip can cause snags and damage. Additionally, reputable brands like BERNINA and Schmetz often test their products rigorously, ensuring consistency in their manufacturing process and suitable needle selection for various fabric types. By consciously choosing high-quality needles, you’re investing in your craft, ensuring your projects look professional and stand the test of time.
Types of Schmetz sewing needles and their benefits
The following needle types are our highlights and do not represent the full range of Schmetz needles available. Schmetz offers a comprehensive selection of specialty sewing needles designed for various applications, each tailored to meet specific sewing needs. Whether you’re working with denim, quilting layers, or crafting intricate embroidery, there’s a Schmetz needle meticulously engineered to enhance your sewing experience. These additional needle types showcase Schmetz’s commitment to innovation and quality, ensuring that sewists have the right tools at their disposal for every project. Use the needle guide by Schmetz to determine which needle you need.
The Gold and Black coatings for sewing needles
One of the standout features of the Schmetz needles is their advanced coatings. The Gold needles come with a Titanium Nitride coating, which makes the surface of the needle twice as hard as a chrome plating, ensuring an excellent wear resistance. However the needle, overall, is not harder or stiffer than a chrome-coated needle. The Gold needles are perfect for those who frequently engage in sewing-intensive projects or work with demanding fabrics. The Black needles, on the other hand, boast a nonstick coating that reduces adhesion. This makes them perfect for working with adhesive sprays or self-adhesive stabilizers, as well as delicate and fine fabrics.
Gold Jeans Sewing Needles
Designed with a medium rounded point, this needle performs effortlessly on coarse and dense fabrics such as denim, oilskin, or canvas. This needle is ideal for heavy-duty sewing projects, and its specialized coating enhances its durability even further.
Gold Topstitch Needles
This needle features a slightly rounded point and an elongated eye to reduce stress on the thread. It’s excellent for metallic, heavy, multiple, and poor-quality threads, making it ideal for free-motion quilting. When a Universal needle isn’t enough, this is your next best bet.
Gold Embroidery Needles
The Gold Embroidery needles have a medium ballpoint and an enlarged eye, making them ideal for embroidery on most fabrics. These needles are especially ideal for beginners, as their exceptionally durable coating compensates for minor operator errors and minimizes the risk of needle breakage. They can be used universally for embroidery and decorative stitching on various fabrics.
Black Super Universal Sewing Needles
This needle has a long eye and a wide thread groove. The coating provides 20% better gliding through fabrics. It’s perfect for various types of fabric, ensuring smooth and efficient sewing.
Black Super Fine Sewing Needles
With a slim needle design and a special scarf, the Black Super Fine needle handles delicate and fine materials with ease. It’s perfect for those who work with intricate fabrics that require gentle handling. The nonstick coating enhances the ease of gliding through the fabric.
Black Super Stretch Sewing Needles
Recommended for highly elastic stretch fabrics and knitted materials such as lingerie, swimwear, and fine jersey. The Black Super Stretch Sewing needles features a wide eye, widened thread groove, special blade, medium ballpoint, and a nonstick coating to prevent skipped stitches.
Stretch needles comparison
Why should you use a needle specialized for stretch fabric? This sewing test with a Universal, Jersey, Stretch and Super Stretch needle demonstrates the difference. You can see skiped stitches and the red bobbin thread. If you look real close, you can also detect tiny red dots with the Stretch needle. The Super Stretch needle clearly won this round.
Hemstitch Needles
The Hemstitch needle has wings on each side, spreading the fabric for a unique stitch. It’s popular for heirloom sewing and decorative cutwork and can be used in multimedia quilts. The holes are more noticeable when the fabric and thread are the same color.
Quick Threading (Handicap) Sewing Needles
The Quick Threading needles feature an easy-to-thread slot in the eye, making them perfect for those who need a bit more convenience. However, they’re not recommended for sensitive fabrics, denim, or quilting due to the weaker eye structure and the potential for snagging fabric or batting.
Twin and Triple Needles
Schmetz offers various tipes of twin and tripple needles, including Universal, Extra Wide, Stretch, Jeans, Embroidery, Metallic, and Hemstitch. They add a unique touch to your sewing projects. Schmetz provided us with some fun sewing examples which you can view in the following article: Twin needles – Threading, stitch settings and creative techniques
Conclusion
Schmetz needles are known for their top-notch quality and versatility, making them a great addition to any sewing enthusiast’s toolkit. Whether you’re tackling delicate fabrics or heavy-duty projects, there’s a Schmetz needle that’s perfect for the job. We were very excited to hear about the extended range of sewing needles and are keen to make our own tests.

It covered all types of fabrics I am ever likely to sew, so I would be pleased to recieve any combination of needles on offer, it just might push me out of my comfort zone to try a different fabric or technique. Will definitely print off to use as reference when I buy needles next time.

Oops. The super fine needle is back, not gold.
I love the GOLD needles. I use them for some types of machine embroidery. I would love to try the other types of needles.
Are there certain kinds of needles to avoid? The ones show in the 1st pic look really bad.
Hi Gloria,
Yes, the needles on the left in the first picture are definitely some I would avoid! It really comes down to which needle system you have and if you have a good quality suplier for it. Since my machines are good with BERNINA/Schmetz needles, I have no reason to buy any others and cann0t tell you which to stay away from. But if I’d see that the needles aren’t straigt, have an irregular surface or irregular eyes in the same set of needles, I would not trust them.
Black super stretch looks interesting as I work with jersey.
I love Schmetz needles and their twin needles are awesome. My biggest problem is knowing which type of fabric is best for which needle. Should I use a really fine no. 60 needle with satin? Although I have a black needle, I haven’t tried it as yet and I’m not sure what type of fabrics it’s best suited for.
Hi Julie,
It really comes down to how the stitch looks and if you are happy with it. If you feel a universal needle no.80 leaves to big of stitch holes, puckers or snags your fabric, then you should change. For satin, what you can do is use a thinner needle (as you already mention), maybe even a black super fine, best in combination with a thinner thread and you could also reduce the stitch length to further improve your seam. Click on the red links in the text about a needle to be forwarded to their product page, and you can learn more about which fabric to use this needle for. The Black Super Fine says:
Delicate, fine and lightweight fabrics such as silk, organza, voile, thin fabrics made from or with synthetic fibers – also in conjunction with adhesive stabilizers
I’m sure the product description will help you further!
I would like to try both the Gold and Black needles as I do a wide variety of needle and embroidery work. I have obtained my first Bernina in 1984 which I gave to my Granddaughter in February 2024 when I bought my new Bernina as a luxury to myself.
Ooh..those black super stretch needles sound like the real deal to try out for me!
Thanks for this…. I have never heard of black coated needles….they sound really useful for using with bondaweb.
I have been sewing on my Berninas for many years but have fairly recently decided to be more generous with replacing my needles instead of trying to use them for longer than they probably should be used. Thanks for reminding me how important it is to replace the needle, often, for the best stitching outcomes.
I’ve been using the gold embroidery needles and they’ve been just great. But I would LOVE to try the Black Super Universal needles on my evening dresses! I imagine these would tackle combination layers of satin, lace and lining with absolute ease.
I have owned a Bernina machine since 1988 and absolutely love it to death and have always used schmetz needles. I’ve used an assortment of needles but would be eager to try the twin needles as the fancy stitches would be amazing to try and look pretty awesome. Would love to win any of the items listed, but would be happy with anything. Thanks

The black type look like my kind of needle.

I’d love to try the Black Super Stretch needles in my sewing machine and L890 serger/coverstitch machine as well. I haven’t finished making a swimming suit and I’m sure these new needles would make a difference! Woo hoo!
Looking forward to using the gold topstitch for free motion quilting.

I’ve used Schmetz needles for many many years and love them. But I would love to try some different Schmetz needles! I have a twin needle and have used it but I had no idea there were so many different types and that they had so many different uses. I will be trying some of the new uses!
My problem is there are so many different types of needles. It would be great if our Bernina sewing center would have a one-day hands-on class to demonstrate and learn about the needles.
A day to test needles is a fun idea! Maybe in combination with testing presser feet? Since needle and presser feet can help sewing various materials, I think a combo might be best to test! I suggest you contact your dealer if they would be interested to organize such a workshop/ event
I would most like to try the superstretch needle. Until recently I rarely used stretch materials but now I have two great-nieces and have been sewing for them, mostly on jersey fabrics using jersey needles. I would like to attach a picture but the server won’t let me! (Even though under 400kb)

Gold jeans needle
It’s wonderful to see there are new needles that will make a big difference to my sewing experience. Needles that can glide through different materials without snags or skipped stitches when using the black super stretch needles is going to be a joy. I’m looking forward to seeing & buying them in South Africa when available. As it will be great as to have more professional finishes to my projects.
I would love to try an assortment of needles! Who know so many attributes.
I love both the gold and black needles for sewing and embroidery. Are they available in the ELX 705 overlocker needle sizes?
Hi Marlys,
I only found Universal and Jersey ELX 705 needles from Schmetz, I can’t see the black or gold needles for it.
I’ve been sewing for over 50 years and I continue to learn. I would like the opportunity to learn more about the black needles with fine silks. Especially in my Bernina serger.
Good morning. I have used mostly Schmetz needles for sewing for several decades. They do a good job for a wide variety of applications. I’ve not tried the new black needles and would like a chance to do so. More information on double and triple needle threading would be useful. Thank you.
Hi Carol, crossing my fingers that you will get a chance to try them!
If you want more info to threading twin and tripple needles, check this article: Twin needles – Threating, stitch settings and creative techniques
Should you have additional questions to threading, leave a comment and I’ll try to help to the best of my abilities!
j’aimerai tester les aiguiiles or et noires, pour l’instant j’ai du mal à en trouver car mon fournisseur a son site en panne, je n’utilise que des aiguilles Schmetz pour ma Bernina 1011
We have a longarm business and use Schmetz 90/14 stretch needles for batiks and quilts using fusible material. We have had better result with the stretch needles than microtex and would be interested in trying the new stretch needles.
I really enjoyed this article and would like an opportunity to try some of these! I go through a lot of machine needles😊

Really enjoyed the clear explanation of a complicated topic. The needle used is so important in achieving professional results. Thanks for this tutorial.
I would love to try Black or Gold, as both are new to me. I quilt, make bags, appliqué and embroider. Golds for strength and blacks for non-stick.
WowWould love to try the 3x gold stitch needle and the5x gold jeans needle. The latter is to create a play blanchet for my soon to be born grand nephew, for which I will use old jeans of mine as the siding that will go on the floor and comforty and soft material for the top side on which baby can play.Thank you M-C

Thank you for the info I ever knew there is so many different needles that bernina use
I prefer Schmetz needles but I’ve never used their gold topstitch needle. I’d love to give that ago. Thx
Great information Gold needles which come with a Titanium Nitride coating would be great longer life.
I am excited to try any of the black needles.
I’d like to try the Black Super Stretch Needles. I have not sewn with the black needles and would like to try them out. Kim
Great information, thank you. I’m hoping I’m correct here – GOLD TOPSTITCH would be great for my quilting. (but also happy with anything available in the giveaway)Sad to say this, but I tend to use the same needle for all work out of habit I suppose, so I’m sure I would notice a difference.
I am extremely interested in trying the Gold Jeans Needles. I have a number of jeans that are way too long (even the so-called petite or short jeans) fail to meet my need for jeans that actually fit my short frame. I have tried several different techniques that have ended with bent or broken needles. Help is needed. Thank a bunch!
Thanks for this article. I’m really keen to try out some of the gold and black needles
The black super universal needles sound interesting to me. My Bernina 550QE gets quite a workout.
I have been wanting to try a double needle on my 770QE. I love Schmetz, they last longer and give superior results.
I’d love to try the Gold Topstitch needles! I’ve used “regular” topstitch needles in the past and liked them, so I’m anxious to try the gold ones to see the difference.
