A big day: demo on the B 990 and sewing a toddler’s apron!
On social media, I saw an invitation to join a BERNINA 990 demonstration. No doubt I wanted to join in! Immediately I had an idea for sewing a simple and quick project that makes my sewing project an ‘a big day’ project: an apron for my grandchild. It’s the first garment I’m sewing for her. And in the same time it’s a special memory to my mother, who gave me the fabric years ago.
During the demonstration, I learned a lot about these functions:
- laser precision
- camera
- big and helpful screen
- giant embroidery sizes
- one step automatic thread function
- jumbo stitches, really helpful for quilting!

Supplies for an apron for a toddler:
- Draft a pattern, according to the child’s measurements.
- A colourful middleweight cotton fabric
- biastape in a matching colour
- Mettler Seralon sewing thread in a matching colour
- Biastape in a matching colour
- Adhesive stabiliser tape.
- magnetic lock for jewellery
- BERNINA 990
Preparing to sew the apron:
Cut out the pattern, leaving 1 cm seam allowance for the side seams and 3 cm on top and bottom of the apron.
Fold over the top and bottom first 1 cm and then 2 cm. Fold over the side seams 0,5 cm and another 0,5 cm. Iron well.
Iron the adhesive tape along the curved armholes. It helps a lot to sew the bias tape to the fabric, because in that area the fabric could stretch while sewing.
Sewing the toddler’s apron
For the top hem, I used the laser as a guide, sewing with the Open Embroidery Foot #20, also engaging dual fabric transport. With the camera and the laser pointer, you have a very good view on the exact spot where the needle drops.
For the side seams and the bottom hem, I liked to try the Edgestitch Foot #10, because it’s one of my favourite feet.
At last, I finished the armholes with biastape with Binder Attachment for Pre-Folded Bias Tape #87 (which I use with unfolded tape).
Finish the toddler’s apron:
Sew the magnetic closure on the bias tape to close the apron.
And it’s finished already. Isn’t that a cute project to sew for an ‘a big day’ feeling?
I’m sure it will be used often!
