Time for a new technique in the Between the Lines QAL. Today in part 6 of the quilt along, we are making row 8, ‘Slanty Stripes’. Row 8 is created by cutting and sewing strips together.
At the end of this blog post, you’ll also find out who the winners of the Giveaway are.
Live Video
In this blog post, you will find all the written instructions. Tomorrow, October 25th at 4 PM, we will have another Between the Lines live video on YouTube. We will be working with strips. I will show you how I cut them, share some tips for sewing the strips together, and we will cut them into triangles.
You can already put your questions about this row, the previous row, or the quilt along in general in the comments of the video. I will address them during the live session.
If you are reading the blog after October 25th, you can calmly watch the recording of the video.
New Here?
We started the Between the Lines QAL on June 6th. A quilt along where we make a row together every four weeks. We work with different techniques: Foundation paper piecing, quarter circles, traditional patchwork, and strip piecing (sewing and cutting strips). If you would like to join, read all about the QAL in this blog post!
Would you like to order a kit with all the materials for this quilt? Then order a Rainbow kit or a Blue-Green kit in the Sugaridoo webshop.
Materials
In the patterns, I have created two versions of the quilt: the rainbow and the blue-green quilt. I specify which fabrics you will use for both versions. Of course, you are free to make the quilt with whichever fabric you like.
Rainbow Quilt
- Dark teal
- Teal striped
- Light gray
- White background
Blue-Green Quilt
- Light teal with squares
- Teal striped
- Light gray
- White background
Before We Begin
Today we are going to cut narrow strips. We will sew them together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. In the first Sugaridoo Bernina QAL, I shared some tips regarding this. You can find them in this blog post under “1/4 inch seam allowance” halfway through the post.
Scraps
Please don’t throw away your stripey scraps from this row. In two weeks I’ll share a fun little project to make with them!
Instructions
Now let’s get started on making row 8, Slanty Stripes.
Cutting
For this row, you will need the following:
Background Fabric
- 6 strips of 1 x 22″
- 16 strips of 1 x 18″
Dark Teal (Light teal with squares)
- 16 strips of 1 x 18″
Teal Striped
- 8 strips of 1 1/2″ x 22″
Light Gray
- 1 strip of 1 1/2 x 22″
The Pattern
Today we will cut, sew, and then cut and sew again.
The first cutting was done as described above. The second cutting will be done using templates.
Click here to download the template pattern.
Upper Triangles
It’s time to sew the first strips together. We start with the strips that are 18″ long. We have 16 strips in the background fabric and 16 in dark teal.
Sew these strips alternately together to make one long piece.
Start by pairing one background strip with one teal strip. Then, sew two pairs together, etc., until you have one piece of all 32 strips sewn together.
We now have a panel that is 32 strips wide and about 18 inches tall.
First, trim the sides straight. As you can see below, I didn’t cut my strips very precisely. And during sewing, I didn’t use pins to keep them neat in place. This leads to shifts with such narrow strips.
So please, don’t do like me. Measure your strips and use some pins while sewing 🙂
It’s no problem if you would lose some fabric on the sides.
Now, we will cut this panel in half and sew it together to create an even longer strip that is 64 strips wide and about 8 inches tall.
Using the Template
Now we are going to cut triangles from this new strip. Use the ‘Large triangle for top part’ from the template.
This template is used to cut five triangles from the strip fabric.
To ensure that the triangle is straight on the fabric, you can fold it in half. Then lay the fold line parallel to a seam in the fabric.
Lower Triangles
For the lower triangles, we will make two versions. We will make two triangles with a gray detail and eight triangles without a gray detail.
Take two strips of background fabric, one strip of gray, and two strips of striped teal. All are 22 inches long. Sew them together in this order:
- teal
- background
- gray
- background
- teal
We will cut out two triangles from this later, but first, let’s prepare the fabric for the other 8 triangles.
Take three strips of teal and two strips of background fabric and sew them together.
Repeat this once more with the remaining strips.
Using the Template
Use the ‘Small triangle for bottom part’ from the template to cut the triangles for the bottom of the row.
Cut out two triangles from the accent fabric.
Make sure that the long side is nicely aligned with the edge of the fabric. This will ensure that the triangles are the same and that we can sew them neatly together later.
Now, we will cut out eight triangles from the remaining strips.
Assembling the Row
Now that we have 5 triangles for the top and 10 triangles for the bottom, we can assemble the 8th row of the Between the Lines QAL.
First, we will form rectangles using 1 triangle from the top and 2 triangles from the bottom.
Lay two triangles right sides together as shown in the illustration below. The cut off corners of the templates will help you easily align the triangles.
Use a few pins to hold the fabric together nicely.
Sew with a 1/4 inch seam and press open.
Repeat with a second triangle on the other side to create a rectangle.
Here are the steps again, but in photos of the fabric:
Sew five rectangles this way. The final step for this row is to sew the rectangles together. Pay close attention to the points of the triangles. Use pins to align all the points perfectly.
Winners of the giveaway
Thank you so much for sharing the images of your rows. Wonderful to see that so many quilters are quilting along with our Between the Lines QAL.
Here are the three winners of a Sugaridoo Happy Notes book:
Congratulations! We will soon be in touch to send you a copy of the Sugaridoo Happy Notes book.
Next Time in Between the Lines QAL
On November 22nd, we will start working on the 7th part of the Between the Lines QAL. Mark November 23rd at 4 PM in your calendar for the next live video!
Have fun making this row!
Best regards,

Can I please have measurements for the triangles,I don’t have a printer,so need to draught my patterns
Hi Sybil, sure! Here is an image of the measurements: https://blog.bernina.com/en/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2024/10/measurements-triangles.png Hope that helps you to draw the patterns.
