Good morning, everyone! Today we will sew a baby comforter using muslin scraps. This can serve as a cuddly companion for babies and children and is easy for little hands to hold. I will show you two different sizes and include both bunny and bear ears. If desired, you can also insert crinkle foil inside the ears to make a great beginner’s toy.
I chose muslin because it’s 100% cotton, machine washable, and feels very soft. This summer, I sewed many clothing items from muslin, leaving me with some larger and smaller fabric scraps. They are perfect for this project.
Materials Overview
You will need:
-
- 2 squares of muslin fabric (here 20 cm sides, the larger one measures 45 cm)
- 4 small muslin fabric scraps
- 4 small scraps of H630 batting
- Printable ear pattern
Sewing the Baby Comforter
Cut out the ears from the batting and iron them onto the muslin according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then cut out the fabric.
For the squares, trim one corner by about 10 cm, as shown in the photo.
Place two ears right sides together and sew along the curve.
Turn the ears right side out through the bottom straight edge and press them nicely.
To make the ears a bit more tactile, fold a pleat for the bear ears, and for the bunny, fold both outer edges toward the center.
Then, attach the ears right sides together to the trimmed corner. Now, place the second muslin piece right sides together on top and sew the layers together, leaving a small opening for turning.
Now, turn the comforter through the opening and carefully shape the corners. Topstitch the muslin comforter along the edges from the right side, automatically closing the turning opening.
If you like, you can tie a knot in the lower corner of the smaller comforter, and for the larger one, two knots are possible. This makes it easier for the baby or toddler to hold the comforter.
Congratulations, your comforter is finished!
The bunny comforter has a small inscription. I didn’t want to embroider it, so for a more personalized touch, I used the Quilting Foot #29 and free-motion stitched it with the feed dogs lowered. Just reinforce the area with some interfacing, and now your child has a unique muslin comforter.
I wish you lots of fun recreating this project; these comforters also make wonderful gifts for newborns.
Warm regards,
Sara
