Between the Lines QAL: Striped Coasters

We’re Making Striped Coasters! This is the second bonus project of the Between the Lines QAL and is based on Row 8, Slanty Stripes.

For this row of the quilt along, we created our own striped fabric. With the leftover pieces, we’ll make striped coasters today.

Between the Lines QAL

The pattern for these coasters is part of the quilt along we started on June 6th, Between the Lines. You can read all about the QAL in this blog post.

We make a row every four weeks. We’re well on our way, but you can still join in and participate in the quilt along.

Would you like to order a kit with all the materials for this quilt? Then you can order a Rainbow or Teal Blue kit in the Sugaridoo webshop.

Bonus Project – Striped Coasters

Let’s get started! Grab the leftover pieces from Row 8. For these coasters, we’re not using a set pattern. You’ll use the scraps to decide how the coasters will look.

Materials Needed

For this project, you’ll need the following items. Please note, these materials are not included in the QAL fabric kit. However, they can be ordered separately in the Sugaridoo webshop, as long as supplies last.

  • Leftovers from Row 8, Slanty Stripes
  • 6 squares of 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches in Light Teal with squares
  • A scrap of batting

Assembling the Front

We’ll start by puzzling the scraps together. The goal is to make squares of approximately 4 to 5 inches.

Look through your scraps. What can you lay out to form a square?

From a longer scrap strip, I cut 4 triangles.

You can lay these together to form a square again.

To check if you have enough fabric for a coaster, you can use a ruler or a 4 to 5 inch paper square.

I sewed the pieces below together and then cut them into 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch squares.

How cute are these mini quilts?

Quilting

The next step is quilting your squares. To do this, place them on a batting scrap.

You can secure them with some spray adhesive or pins. But since these are such small projects, it’s hardly necessary.

These coasters are great for trying out some decorative stitches on your machine. Let your creativity run free!

Quilting with straight lines, stitching just beside the seams, also gives a nice effect on the coasters.

For this last coaster, I used stitch 764 on my BERNINA 770 QE. With a stitch width of 9mm, there are so many fun options!

Trimming to Size

All done quilting your mini quilts? Now you can trim them neatly into squares.

They already look so cute!

Final Step – Adding the Back

The final step for making the coasters is attaching the back. Use squares that are the same size as your mini quilt.

Place them right sides together and sew all around, 1/4 inch from the edge. Leave an opening on one side to turn the coaster right side out.

After sewing, trim the corners.

Turn the coasters right side out and use something pointy (but not too sharp) to push out the corners.

Press the coaster flat, and press the opening neatly to the inside, 1/4 inch.

Now, sew one final round around the coaster, close to the edge.

With this last round, you also close the opening.

Tadaaa! You have a whole set of lovely coasters made from the leftover pieces of Row 8.

Between the Lines QAL

In two weeks, we’ll continue with the next row in the Between the Lines QAL.

See you then!
