These slippers are fairly easy to sew with a few great tips along the way. The step by step photos & description of how these slippers go together will be very helpful for those who have never made slippers before. Let me show you.
Supplies Needed:
- 0.3m reversible plush or fleece
- remnant leather or pleather, thin
- remnant decorative ribbon 2.54cm wide x 60cm long ( 1” x 24”) or fabric to make your own)
- remnant of cotton fabric
- Style-Vil (Vlieseline) or Bosal or Soft & Stable ( 2 sole sized pieces)
- thread to match
- Reverse Pattern Foot #1
- Optional but helpful – Zigzag Foot with Non-Stick Sole #52
- Free pattern down load for Slipper booties “Tammy”
- sewing clips or pins
- Used was a BERNINA 790 PRO, however this project could be sewn on most machines
Preparing the Pattern:
- Download the pattern Slipper booties “ Tammy”and print in the original size
- Place the pattern pages beside each other as indicated by the arrows and tape together accurately as shown
- Cut out the pattern pieces in the size you desire adding a seam allowance
Cutting:
Pieces by number
1. cut 2 of shaft on the fold from fleece/ plush
2. cut 2 of foot part on the fold from fleece/plush
3. cut 2 soles in leather/ pleather
4. cut 2 from fleece/plush, cut 2 from Style-Vil/ Soft & Stable, cut 4 from cotton fabric (navy as shown) *note this is a modification from the original pattern*
Sewing the shaft of the slipper:
- sew the back seam on the shaft, press seams open
- roll over the top of each slipper to the wrong side , pin or clip and top stitch
- Place ribbon over top of shaft seam on the wrong side centred and top stitch onto the seam close to the edge of the ribbon on both sides, leave a 5 mm (1/4”) gap at the bottom
TIP: try not to stretch the fleece or plush, handle with a gentle hand
Sewing the foot:
- Clip or pin the foot piece-2 to the shank right sides together matching the hearts and stars as per the pattern pieces
- Sew this piece slowly and press the seam allowance towards the shaft , top stitch on the right side of the Slipper booties “Tammy”
Sewing the sole:
- Using the Zigzag Foot with Non-Stick Sole #52 baste the leather to the fleece/plush sole wrong sides together, right sides facing out ( slight deviation from the original pattern). Repeat for second slipper
- Matching the flower and diamond patterns as per the paper pattern, clip/pin the sole to the shaft and foot as shown. Leather side facing the right side of the shaft / foot. Note: you will need to gather the front to make it fit as the foot is longer than the sole
- Stitch the seam carefully and trim the seam allowance close to the seam, zig zag (optional)
- Turn to the right side and roll the top of the shaft down twice, tack in place with hand stitch (optional )
- For the inner sole, place the 2 pieces of cotton right sides together and the Vlieseline/ Soft and Stable on top , sew all around leaving a gap for turning , turn to the right side and top stitch. Repeat this for the second sole. Insert these soles into the Slipper booties “Tammy”
- These soles not only add to the comfort of the slipper, they also add structure
TIP: my slippers turned about a little slouchier than expected . Recommended to try a fairly firm fleece or plush fabric.
These Slipper booties “ Tammy” sure look soft & warm for the winter season rapidly approaching.
Give this free pattern download a try and make them for your family this season. Easy enough for gift giving .
Enjoy and Happy Sewing !
