Hello, all you hardworking sewers and quilters, I am so happy to finally be able to tell you: I invite you to a new quilt-along. This time we will take a close look at the temperatures and then sew a Temperature Quilt. If you already know the Temperature Quilts, you know how different and exciting the results are, especially when you sew in a large group in different places.
A Temperature Quilt shows the highest and lowest values for a location over the course of a year. Each block counts as one day and consists of 2 colors in our Quilt-Along. There is actually only one specific requirement for this quilt: it consists of 365 blocks, as many as there are days in a year. A beautiful selection of fabrics is assigned to individual temperature ranges. That’s it!
The BERNINA Temperature Quilt-Along 2025 starts soon, are you participating?
I’ve been working on this great quilt for a few weeks now, with the 2023 temperatures from my home near Ulm, and I can tell you this much: It was really exciting to see how the colors of the individual temperatures came together in the layout over the course of the year.
There are two layouts to choose from for our Temperature Quilt-Along
- Variant 1: classic piecing, which forms snowball blocks, is also super suitable for all patchwork beginners.
- Variant 2: the Flying Geese, which is sewn using the Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) technique:
Well, what do you think, is one or the other layout something for you?
Will you take part? I would be delighted! You can find all the information about the joint campaign below.
For whom is the Temperature Quilt-Along?
Is the Temperature Quilt-Along suitable for beginners?
Definitely yes. The Snowball pattern in particular, which you can see in the quilt I made in advance, is very easy to sew. To encourage you, I’ll show you that not every corner fits perfectly. But in the overall picture it is not noticeable at all. Sewing is fun, relaxing and enjoyable, not stressful. In the end, you will have sewn a fantastic quilt that you can be proud of. Before you start cutting and sewing the blocks, there will be detailed sewing instructions for both quilt patterns. There will also be a print-ready PDF for the Foundation Paper Piecing of the Flying Geese.
How much time and effort is involved?
The finished quilt consists of 12 rows, one for each month, and measures approx. 125 x 160 cm (49″ x 63″). The sewing time is comfortable and even if you are a little behind, 2-3 weeks are quickly caught up and sewn.
Do I have to register?
Would you like to take part in the Quilt-Along? You are more than welcome! Participation is free and there are no obligations. You don’t need to register either. You can find all the information and patterns here on the BERNINA blog. The start will be in January, but you can sew at your own pace. Just don’t forget to take the daily temperature and keep the raffle dates in mind. š
The fabrics for the Temperature Quilt-Along
For the Temperature Quilt, I chose a color selection of 20 fabrics that is not quite as common for the classic Temperature Quilts. It is milder, softer and resembles the seasons. I calculated the fabric quantities based on my sewn Temperature Quilt 2023, plus an estimated amount of fabric for temperatures in colder and warmer regions. In the event of major temperature fluctuations, it may be necessary to reorder one color or another. This is not so easy to calculate for a temperature quilt.
Let’s take a look at the Kona solids:
It’s cold outside Baby!
It’s getting hot Baby!
Do you want to sew with the same fabrics as me? Wonderful! If you sew the BERNINA Temperature Quilt-Along 2025 with these colors, we can make a comprehensive comparison of how the year went in terms of temperature at the end of 2025. I’m already looking forward to that.
Matching fabric kits in the quantities already cut for the Temperature Quilt-Along are available from Andrea Kollath at Quiltmanufaktur. The fabric kits are calculated for the final size of 125 x 160 cm. You can order them here:
Quiltmanufaktur also delivers to Austria and Switzerland as well as Germany. If you live somewhere else, you can also get Kona Solids from quilt stores in your area.
Even if you are planning to sew larger blocks for the Snowball, it is best to start with this fabric pack. You will notice in the third third of the year if you are still missing some fabric.
Of course you can also use your own fabrics and use your fabric stash for the Temperature Quilt Along. Please check that you have enough of the same fabric for the respective temperatures. Information on fabric requirements can be found in a blog article that will follow tomorrow.

As Erhard Horst Ellermann (civil engineer) says: āWeather is a popular topic of conversation, you don’t have to wash or iron it. It has a good response with communication hooksā. Well, if he only knew what we’ll do with the weather in 2025: we’ll definitely iron it and sew a quilt out of it.
Happy Sewing!
Jutta
Hi team Temperature quilt 2025, I’mĀ Mala from Dubai and I am also the local Bernina Distributor. I’m lagging behind by 2 ( if I start im March) month as i would like to spread this quilt along in our gulf region and possibly create the excietment for this lovey project in the gulf region. I’m thinking we will record temperatures from this time onwards. I also want to do special offers during this period and hence my time line. Please advice. Thanking you, Mala
Hi Mala,
Nice to meet you! No worries if you only start in March, as long as you write down or look for the temperature records, you can start any day. I will write you an email as of how I can be of assistance to you š
Kind regards, Ramona
Hi!Ā I’m excited to participate in the temperature quilt along.Ā I especially like that we’ll be able to view days of each month side by side on the final quilt top.Ā I plan to FPP the flying geese quilt top and wondered if you could provide the flying geese template formatted to U.S. letter-sized paper; i.e. 8.5″ x 11″?Ā When I print the template to 100% so that the 1″ testblock is the correct size, I lose the bottom 1/8″ of the pattern of the first flying geese.Ā There is not enough room on the paper to actually sew the fabric.Ā Appreciate your help.Ā Thank you!
Hi Danica,
I will look into this and see if a collegue can provide the US Letter format.
Hi Danica,
We now have the Flying Geese pattern in US Letter Format: Download FPP pattern US Letter
I hope this will solve the problem!
Hi i live in Australia- is it possible to get a kit from any stores here? Thanks VanessaĀ
Hi Vanessa,
The Kona fabrics are sold in stores worldwide, I would either phone a few fabric stores in your area and ask if they have them, or try an online store! When i Googled “Kona fabrics Australia” I found this store: https://www.thenextstitch.com.au/search?q=kona
Iām so excited to start this Temperature Quilt! Ā Looking forward to learning more about it and the pattern!
I need help and links to the snowball pattern & fabric chart template. Ā šš»
The templates will go online in an hour!
I’m looking forward to starting this quilt along tomorrow. My fabrics look so yummy all laid out, and I can’t wait to cut into them. I’ll be making the Flying Geese blocks.Ā
Come back in an hour and you can start with the first task!
Looking forward to making this quilt. Ā It will be a birthday gift for my husband, itās a special year for him. Ā
That sounds lovely, and I wish you and your husband a Happy New Year!
This one sounds great!Ā I will do the snowball one! Need to get some fabric sorted.Thank-you looking forward to good weather! From New Zealand.
Looking forward to joining in the fun. Have always wanted to make a temperature quilt. Thanks for hosting.Ā
Iām so excited to participate in Berninaās Temperature 2025 Quilt-Along! Ā I live in San Diego and we donāt have much range in our climate, so I think I will need to have tighter ranges to get more range in color. Ā 1/1/2025 our temperature today was high 69Ā°F with low 41Ā°F. Ā I think I will add a twist for when it rains (which can be a rare occurrence) maybe a teardrop in light blue over the block. Ā Ā
Hi Becky,
Feel free to adjust your temperature range the way which works for you! I love the teardrop idea. It could be an applique, or maybe you mark those days and use a teardrop shape when quilting?
I am not a quilter. I won’t be participating in the quilt-along. I do want to say that my first impression of Varient 1 is that the way the red fabric forms “X”s looks like the label on Dos Equis beer. I will certainly understand if you don’t publish my comment.
If you join or not is totally up to you. There will be more sewing and embroidery projects coming, so no need to join if you do not feel like quilting!
This will be a fun project!Ā Thanks for all the preparation to get set up.Ā I will be using my stash following the suggested color.Ā Ā
Looking forward to this.Ā I am loving the Flying geese
This sounds like fun. When will we find out approximately how much fabric we need for the snowball one. I like the 20 Kona fabrics Jutta chose.
Hi Elizabeth, have a look at the second published article, it’s already on. I wrote the quantities of all fabrics we use. Cordially, Jutta
How much of each fabric is needed to start off the quilt along? I will be making the snowball version and will use the same color fabric as Jutta. Thanks
Hi Deborah, check this article:
https://blog.bernina.com/en/2024/12/temperature-quilt-along-fabrics-and-first-raffle/
I’m excited about this TQ!!Ā Will we get a list of the fabrics by name/number and date ranges so we can source fabric locally?Ā Ā
Hi Lee Ann, the list for the fabrics and temperature ranges are online in 1 hour! Here’s the list of fabrics:
https://blog.bernina.com/en/2024/12/temperature-quilt-along-fabrics-and-first-raffle/
I am so excited about participating. Ā I am hoping to find the fabrics locally or on lineĀ
Sounds like a fun QAL. Thank you for hosting.
