DIY ‘Hair bow for the holidays’
How nice of you to check out Day 23 of the Advent Calendar! Especially for BERNINA’s Advent Calendar, I designed this cute big hair bow and made the DIY of this hair bow for the holidays. For a festive look, you can make it in a in a shiny, glitter or velvet fabric. Or who knows, maybe you can make it in the same fabric as a festive dress you already made! 😉
I came across the fabric at the Intratuin. I think it’s officially a table runner and you can use it for “home-styling,” but I saw a festive hair bow in it.
After each step I iron the seams open or the fabric flat. This makes for a nicer end result.
Supplies:
- Sewing machine, I sew with the fabulous BERNINA 480
- Festive fabric with little to no stretch
- Yarn
- Needle
- Alligator clip 40 mm
DIY for the hair bow:
Cut
Cut 3 pieces of fabric in the following dimensions:
1 Piece of fabric measuring 25×25 cm
1 Piece of fabric measuring 15×19 cm
1 Piece of fabric measuring 4×10 cm
Sewing the hair bow
You start sewing with the bottom of the hair bow. Fold the square piece of fabric into a triangle with right sides together. Stitch the two open sides closed 1 cm from the edge. Leave an opening to turn out the right side of the fabric later. Trim the excess seam at the corners.
Turn right side out. Press out the corners and flatten. Sew the turning hole closed by stitching briefly along the edge or sewing closed with needle and thread with an invisible stitch.
Gather the triangle in the middle of the long side to the point and secure with needle and thread. You can now see the bottom of the hair bow already forming.
Fold the 15×19 cm piece in half with right sides together. (The short sides fold toward each other.) Stitch this side closed, but leave an opening to turn over later.
Now fold the seam to the center as done in the picture. Stitch the side seams closed 1 cm from the edge. Then cut the corners at an angle.
Now turn the work right side out and press out the corners. You can stitch the opening closed by hand. To be honest, sometimes I do leave it open because when the final result comes in, the opening is completely lost anyway.
Gather the rectangle in the center from bottom to top and secure with needle and thread. You have now gathered both rags and secured them in the middle with a thread.
Fold the patch for the band lengthwise right sides together. (The long sides fold toward each other.) Stitch the long side closed 1 cm from the seam. Now the good side of the band should be turned outward. When the fabric is a bit stiff, it can be quite a tinker. That’s why I often use a safety pin. Insert the safety pin in front of the end of the fabric and pass it through the tunnel to the other end.
Putting together hair bow
Place the two parts of the hair bow together and fold the ribbon around them. Should you have fabric glue in the house, you can glue it on first and then secure it. Or first put the two parts of the bow together with needle and thread.
Sew the strap on the back with needle and thread. In doing so, I fold both ends inward a bit first so you don’t see them anymore. Then I place both sides exactly against each other and then hand sew with a ladder stitch.
Insert the alligator clip at the back under the strap and glue if necessary.
Optional: Sew a matching button or rhinestone on the front strap for a festive touch.
Final result
Ready is your hair bow for the holidays!
