Sewing machine love for the Christmas tree
A mini sewing machine as a Christmas tree ornament!
The magic of Christmas lies in the small, lovingly designed details – and for us sewing enthusiasts, a very special motif is a must: a sewing machine as a Christmas tree ornament! We are at the 17th door of the blog advent calendar which this year has the motto “Create your Magic!”. Today I’m going to show you how to sew a Christmas tree ornament that will shine magically on any tree as a symbol of creativity. The pattern is available free of charge until the end of December.
Sewing machine Christmas tree pendant – the free pattern
This Christmas tree ornament is made from a small quilt block measuring 4 “x 4”. You can get the pattern free of charge until 31.12.2024 at the following link:

The pattern is perfect for small accents in your sewing projects. Especially as a Christmas tree ornament, it will make your tree sparkle. There are two different variants to choose from:
- On Point – the quilt block is designed in an angled orientation, perfect for a padded ornament.
- Straight – for all those who prefer a classic and symmetrical design. You can use this block for many other sewing projects such as bags, pincushions, pouches etc.
Materials for a tree ornament:
- Scraps of fabric for the mini sewing machine and the background. The backing fabric measures 4.5 “x 4.5” square.
- Mini felt or fabric scraps for the keyboard and the mini machine’s rotary wheel
- Vlieseline 4.5″x 4.5″ / approx. 12 x 12 cm
- Ribbon approx. 20″/ 50 cm long
- a bobble of your choice
- some embroidery thread
- about a handful of absorbent cotton
Sewing and decorating made easy:
- Cut out your pattern pieces along the dotted line.
- Now sew the quilt block using the foundation paper piecing method. If you have never done this before, there are detailed step-by-step instructions, including videos, in my previous BERNINA Quilt-Alongs. Take a look here.
3. When you have finished sewing the 6 segments, place the segments in front of you as shown in the overview.
4. Now sew the segments together as described in the pattern. I prefer to use the Patchwork Foot #97 for my sewing machine.
5. The block then looks as follows:
6. Now remove the paper and iron the block onto the fusible web, unfortunately you can hardly see it in the photo 🙂
7. Cut a mini circle out of the felt, approx. 3/8″ (1 cm) in diameter, and a small rectangle 1/2″ x 3/4″ (12 x 18 mm), which will be the mini wheel and keypad. Then glue them onto the machine with textile or craft glue. Cut out the back and prepare the cord and bobble.
8. Now embroider a few stitches on the dial. Place a stitch for a needle. Then I embroidered 6 French knots as mini buttons. I wrapped the French knots three times around the needle, otherwise it would be too thick.
9. Now place the cord and the pom-pom on the two opposite corners of the ornament and pin them in place. Or you can use clips.
10. Now place the back piece right sides together on the front piece.
11. Now sew along the outer edge with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Make sure that the cord and the bobble are exactly in the corner. Leave an opening of approx. 2″ (5 cm) at one edge. This is for turning the ornament. I also love my Patchwork Foot #97.
12. Cut the corners at a 45° angle, this gives nice sharp corners.
13. Now turn the ornament right side out and stuff it with wadding. You can close the opening either by hand or with a mini seam allowance using your machine.
14. Et voilà, the prettiest little mini sewing machine Christmas tree ornament is finished.
How to customize your tree ornament
Whether in traditional Christmas colors or in a playful mix of fabrics – the sewing machine pendant can be wonderfully personalized. Add small details such as bows, glittering stones or beads to make the ornament shine! There are no limits to your creativity.
Have fun sewing and designing and of course a wonderful Advent season full of creative projects!
See you soon
