Hello everyone, my daughter has a closet full of tulle skirts that I’ve always been a little envious of. Last week, while sitting at the dentist, I had the idea that I could go to the carnival ball dressed as the Tooth Fairy. That’s when my long-awaited dream of a tulle skirt came into play. The occasion was perfect to complement my handmade Tooth Fairy t-shirt with a colorful glitter tulle skirt. Today, I’m going to show you how to sew such a tulle skirt. The pattern is free and it’s a freebie from Leni Pepunkt. You can find the download link below in the material list.
To give the skirt more volume, I used a total of four layers.
I got help with the sewing from the BERNINA L 850 overlocker and the BERNINA 590 sewing machine.
The BERNINA L 850 is an overlocker with an automatic air-threader. Additionally, this machine has a great free arm and a fantastic extension table that increases the working surface.
The BERNINA 590 is a compact sewing and embroidery machine with everything a sewing enthusiast needs. It offers maximum comfort and precise stitch results. Besides the automatic thread cutter, this machine also uses jumbo bobbins, meaning fewer interruptions for re-threading. I’m also impressed with the perfect fabric feed and the large touchscreen, which makes navigation super easy.

- 1 x lining piece for the skirt
- 3 x outer tulle pieces for the skirt
- 65 cm long elastic band
Sewing the Elastic Waistband
As the first step, sew the elastic waistband together using a zigzag stitch on your sewing machine. I go over it at least 3-4 times to make sure the seam doesn’t come undone.
Overlocking the Lining Fabric
I always recommend using a lining. Even if you use soft tulle, which is comfortable to wear, the whole skirt would not be wearable due to its transparency. I find a viscose woven fabric especially flowing and lovely for the lining. Pin the entire hem in a circular shape using Wonder Clips. I fold the hem twice, 1 cm each time, and sew it neatly with a straight stitch. Since tulle doesn’t fray, I left the three tulle layers unoverlocked.
Attaching the Three Layers of Tulle
Once the lining is hemmed, lay the lining fabric right side up in front of you and carefully pin all three layers of tulle to the waistband, one by one. Once this step is completed, pin the previously sewn elastic waistband right sides together on top.
Sewing the Elastic Waistband onto the Tulle Skirt
Now, we’ve reached the final step. Sew the elastic waistband onto the skirt using either the zigzag stitch on your sewing machine or the overlocker. It’s crucial to stretch everything evenly. And voilà, your quick and easy tulle skirt is ready!
I hope I’ve inspired you today to sew such a magical tulle skirt.
In combination with my other handmade accessories, I think my Tooth Fairy costume looks really cool. This is definitely not something everyone will be wearing. But I’m sure I will wear this beautiful, airy tulle skirt often in the summer as well.
Happy sewing!
Your Jenny
