Good morning, everyone! Today, we are sewing a wool basket with a 15 cm round base and a drawstring closure. I used teddy fabric and cotton for the exterior, reinforcing them differently. While perfect for wool projects, this basket is also great for other storage needs. As a hobby crocheter, I love that it keeps yarn dust-free and portable. I chose these fabrics to repurpose leftover teddy fabric sustainably. I’m thrilled with the final result—what do you think?
Materials Overview
You will need:
- Wool basket template A4
- Wool basket template US Letter
- Leftover teddy fleece, leftover cotton fabric
- Cord and 2 beads
- 1-2 labels
Cutting Instructions:
- Large circle from teddy fleece and cotton
- Small circle from Style-Vil by Vlieseline
- 12 x 52 cm from teddy fleece and H250 interfacing by Vlieseline, cotton, H630 batting
- 22.5 x 52 cm from cotton (lining)
- 6 x 52 cm from cotton (drawstring casing)
- About 70 cm of cord
Cut out the pieces according to the measurements and iron the batting onto the cotton strip as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Also, iron the interfacing onto the teddy fabric—each on the wrong side of the fabric. If your teddy fabric sheds as much as mine, I recommend serging all the edges with an overlocker.
Iron the strip for the drawstring casing first in half, wrong sides together, then fold the short edges inward by 1 cm and stitch them down close to the edge.
If you don’t want the Style-Vil to shift, you can secure it to the teddy fabric with a few decorative or topstitching stitches. Ideally, you can also use the iron-on version. In any case, attach it centered on the wrong side of the teddy fabric.
Sewing a Wool Basket
If desired, you can sew one or more labels onto the teddy fabric. Then place the cotton fabric right sides together on top and stitch along the long edge. Turn both fabrics right side out and topstitch the seam you just closed close to the edge.
Next, fold it in half, right sides together, and sew the side seam.
Mark the quarter points on both the base and the main part.
Now sew the main part to the base, right sides together. My preferred foot for this step is the Zipper Foot #4 on my BERNINA 790 PRO.
The outer shell of the wool basket is now complete. Now sew the lining in the same way, except that the main part is already one continuous piece.
Next, attach the drawstring casing at the top, ensuring that all open edges align. Then, place the lining over it, right sides together. Sew the seam, leaving a turning opening. Use this opening to turn the basket right side out.
Fold the seam allowances of the opening inward and topstitch the entire seam close to the edge. This will automatically close the turning opening.
Finally, thread the cord through the drawstring casing and add the beads. Congratulations, your wool basket is complete!
It’s that easy to sew this wool basket!
Tell us, what would you use this basket made of teddy fabric and cotton for?
Warm regards,
Sara
