Sewing a Tool Belt for Kids as an Upcycling Project

Good morning, dear ones! Today, we will sew a tool belt – it can be adjusted for little or big kids depending on its contents, making it a wonderful gift idea. It’s also an eco-friendly project, as we will be upcycling an old pair of children’s jeans. The measurements will naturally vary depending on the child’s age. My measurements below are suitable for children aged 3 to about 8 years. Of course, you can choose larger dimensions if your child is older.

Before moving on to the materials list, you can personalize your belt by embroidering the child’s name on a piece of denim. I won’t go into detail on this step, as it is optional and does not require further explanation in my opinion.

Materials Overview

You will need:

  • 1 pant leg from a pair of children’s jeans (cut below the crotch and at the hem), about 40 cm long
  • 1 small and 1 larger pocket
  • 2 pieces of webbing (20 cm and 35 cm long)
  • 1 elastic band, about 20 cm long
  • 1 buckle

First, thread the webbing through both buckle parts as shown, fold the edges inward twice by 2 cm, and stitch them close to the edge and diagonally.

Next, arrange both pockets, the elastic band, and optionally the name on your pant leg. Before sewing everything in place, remove the inseam of the pant leg and fold the back side open. This allows you to topstitch everything all around. Make sure to leave the tops of the pockets open. You can add vertical stitches at different intervals on the elastic band so that tools can be secured later.

Then, place the webbing with the top edge centered on the pant leg and stitch the short edges close to the edge. This ensures nothing shifts in the next step.

Next, fold the back pant leg right sides together over it and sew the open edges together, leaving a turning opening.

Trim the corners and turn the tool belt right side out through the opening. Fold in the edges and topstitch the belt close to the edge from the right side, automatically closing the turning opening.

Congratulations, your tool belt is finished!

Sewing a tool belt – For younger kids, you can fill it with toy tools, while for older ones, real tools can be used. And they are ready to get to work!

Enjoy recreating and gifting this project!
