Thread & Coffee: Let’s chat with Kylie from KATM – with a label package raffle!

Creative, clever, and a little bit chaotic – that’s Kylie from Kylie and the Machine! If you’ve recently seen a sewing label with a cheeky saying that made you smile, chances are it’s hers. Kylie is the founder of the popular label KATM. What started as a small DIY project in her living room is now an international business with fans around the globe – and even its own podcast!

In our interview, Kylie takes us behind the scenes: she shares her beginnings, favourite projects, the cost of replacing car key remotes, and why she sometimes dreams of a place where no one asks questions and someone just washes her hair. 😄

💥 And the best part? At the end of the interview, we’re giving away an exclusive goodie bundle from Kylie! So: read on, get inspired – and with a bit of luck, you could soon be holding a piece of KATM in your own hands.

Interview with Kylie from KATM

Dear Kylie, who are you? Please describe yourself in a few words.
I’m an introverted extrovert that needs to be doing things with my hands all the time – that’s how I process things! I like solving problems. I just turned 40 and am ready for the next phase of life. I’m from Brisbane, Australia and I’m proudly part First Nations. As an only child, crafts and art were my main form of entertainment growing up – and I never really stopped! Some people think I’m funny, but my humour is very dry and not everyone gets it. I always want the best quality things, but I don’t always have the budget – which is why I’ve been through quite a few sewing machines. I started with a Brother, moved to a Janome, but once I switched to BERNINA there was no turning back.

Your label is called Kylie and the Machine. Where did the name come from?
Kylie and The Machine was never really meant to be a business name. It was just my Instagram handle because I really liked Florence And The Machine at the time and thought it was a fun pun. Now it’s our business name, but we usually use the acronym KATM – the full name is a bit of a mouthful.

How did the business come about and how has it developed since it was founded?
It started at home, when I was sewing clothes for myself and my family and wanted to add labels to make the garments feel more finished. Instead of something like “Kylie Made It”, I wanted funny or cute little messages, and ideally a range of labels to choose from depending on the project or the recipient. I decided to order a big batch, pack them into small sets, and see if I could sell most of them and keep a few. The response was massive – overwhelming! And it just slowly grew from there into what KATM is today. I launched the first batch of labels in 2017, and now we have an office, a team, and a podcast. This is our seventh year in business!

It takes courage to go self-employed, and not everyone in the DIY world finds success. What was it like for you? Were there tough times? When did you realise it was working?
It became clear things were going well when we started getting wholesale orders – mostly from independent sewing shops around the world. That meant I’d made something people wanted, put it out there, and shop owners believed in it enough to sell it to their customers. We never approached wholesalers; the demand just came in! In 2019 we moved into our current HQ and began paying a commercial rent/ lease. COVID was a boom time – many in the sewing world can probably relate. Afterwards came a kind of post-COVID crash due to shifts in global economies and rising living costs. We’re very lucky to have a fantastic finance manager who made sure we made smart decisions to ride out the ‘dips’. The toughest time was late 2021, when we had to make some hard choices and changes to packaging, pricing, product range and the team to stay profitable and sustainable. So many small fabric and haberdashery (notions) stores are closing. We’re hoping to stick around for the long haul!

What products are part of the range today?
We started out with labels and now we have Denim Hardware & Kits, Patterns, Sewing Accessories including Fabric ID Tape and Label Gluestick, plus a yearly Label Advent Calendar.

Do you have a bestseller?
Yes! Our recently launched Fabric ID Tape is probably our best-selling product – we’ve sold over 20,000 rolls so far, more than any other individual product. A mini version is coming soon, so stay tuned!

Where are your labels made?
They’re made in China, where all the latest label-weaving technology and looms are.

Is there a product that’s especially close to your heart?
The KATM Label Gluestick was in the works for what felt like forever! Seeing it finally produced and being loved by sewists all over the world is an amazing feeling. We’ve received so many beautiful messages and reviews – some from people who struggle with pins due to mobility issues who’ve said it’s helped them keep enjoying the craft.

Do you ship your products all over the world? What impact do tariffs have on shipments to the US?
Yes, absolutely. We are so proud to have KATM customers all around the globe and count ourselves lucky to have so many wonderful wholesalers too. Currently the tariffs are at 30% for importing our products into the US if a customer orders directly from our website. We are keeping a close eye on the situation since it seems to change quite often!

Are you planning to expand the brand further? Are you going to take over the world?
That’s the plan… world domination 😝

We love your unique pieces and bold designs! How would you describe your style and concept?
My personal handmade style is about pieces that feel physically comfortable – good fit is everything. But for KATM, I love playing with bold colours and fun combinations in our sewing labels and accessories. My own style is more low-key.

What did you do before you founded Kylie and the machine?
I’ve done many things; tattoo artist, retail management, bar work, insurance sales and becoming a mum…

You’ve recently started a collaboration with Claire Ritchie. How did that come about?
We happen to know Claire personally – not only is she the loveliest human, but her artwork works perfectly as label designs. We knew our customers would love sewing miniature versions of her art into their garments. We launched our first collaboration in 2020, and the new ‘Full Bloom’ collection is our second!

Aside from these collaborations, are all KATM designs created by you? Can you describe the process from idea to finished product?
We usually start with a concept or a phrase. Then we think about how someone might use it and in what context. That helps guide the style, design, and overall aesthetic.

You also produce a podcast. What’s it about?
The Sewing Club Podcast is like a book club – but for sewing! Each episode, Gemma (my co-host) and I choose a pattern from the sewing community, make it, and review it. We announce the pattern in advance so listeners can sew along at home.

When did you discover your passion for sewing, and how did you learn the craft?
In 2012, I was pregnant and decided I had to make a quilt for the baby. I wasn’t working and living in suburban Canada, so it was more about having something to do. I found a sewing machine in a cupboard and decided this would be my thing for the next few months. I found joy in making during nap times and always looked forward to the next nap-time project. I learned everything by following pattern instructions!

What’s your favourite thing to sew? Has that changed over time?
Right now, I love sewing bags – they’re functional, don’t require fitting, and I can be more adventurous with colour choices I wouldn’t wear in clothing.

Are you also a quilter?
Quilting is actually what got me into sewing in the first place. But I later found I preferred the instant gratification that comes with garment sewing.

What do you love most about sewing?
Creating something from raw materials.

What part do you like least?
Cutting out PDF patterns – not a fan.

What’s the most elaborate or unusual thing you’ve made from fabric?
An “X-ray” dress made from black silk organza. I used 1/8” French seams and added flounces, zippers, and all sorts of details.

Where is your creative journey taking you?
Nowhere in particular – I just love having this constant flow of creativity.

Your husband runs the “Waffle Pottery”. Is your home as colourful and creative as we imagine?
It definitely is – there are a lot of strong personalities living in our house!

How do you spend your time when you’re not sewing? Do you have hobbies to balance things out?
I dabble in all kinds of handcrafts, with varying levels of success. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with a 3D printer and learning the software to design 3D models.

Is there any advice you’d give to someone new to sewing?
You don’t need to have sewn in school or as a kid – there are so many free and accessible resources online to help you learn.

What are you currently working on? Can you share a sneak peek?
I’m cutting out three pairs of jeans, a pair of dungarees, and a denim jacket – all for the re-launch of our Denim Hardware Kits.

We hear you’re a bit of a BERNINA collector! Which machine do you use most and why?
I’ve got my travel machine – the B 325. Then there’s the B 570 QE from around 2015, the B 570 Tula Pink, the Record 830 from the 70s, and a 910. The older 570 QE is my main go-to. I also have two BERNINA overlockers – one at home, one at work. I love having machines set up for denim: one with regular thread, one with topstitch thread.

Do you have a favourite BERNINA accessory?
I love the vintage presser feet – especially the vintage straight stitch foot #13.

We think we spotted a BERNINA in your graphics. Take it as a compliment! So, when are you getting your BERNINA tattoo?
That’s a great question! I do have another tattoo planned… we’ll see!

Fun facts

  • What kind of music do you listen to while sewing?
I listen to hz frequencies to calm my brain
  • Your favourite place?
Hanging out in my hammock on my deck, looking at the trees while having some cat cuddles
  • What do you spend money on unnecessarily?
Forgetting to cancel subscriptions, late fees, cancellation fees, replacement car key remote fees from putting them in the washing machine.
  • Favourite fabric right now? All-time favourite?
Linen – it behaves how you want it to, is strong and lasts a long time, I feel like it’s the best value in terms of how much a RTW linen garment would cost in a shop vs to make at home.
  • Favourite podcast? (you own doesn’t count)
    The Science Vs podcast
  • Order or organized chaos?
    Organised chaos
  • How big is your fabric stash?
It’s actually not that big. It’s stashed in many areas so maybe it’s bigger than I think but I’ve been slowly working through it for a while now. I generally buy fabric with a project in mind, instead of stashing.
  • Trousers or skirt?
    Trousers
  • If you had infinite time, what project would you tackle?
I would make a big wedding dress; I’m already married but it would be fun to make a wedding dress for myself
  • Sewing motto?
    Always colour match your threads
  • How many unfinished objects?
Probably less than as many fingers as I have.
  • In your next life, you will be
    … a koala
  • Who was the last person you gave a compliment? What for?
I think compliments all the time, they just don’t always make it out of my mouth.
  • What are you particularly good at?
Figuring things out that I don’t know anything about. DIY anything in general!
  • What don’t you care about at all?
    Sudoku
  • Biggest sewing disaster so far?
I blocked them out of my memory.
  • Undo seams or “oh, never mind”?
    Undo seams always.
  • Where do you really want to go?
Somewhere quiet where no one is asking me questions and people are just feeding me food and washing my hair. But if that place doesn’t exist I would like to explore Europe.
  • Your secret shopping tip for sewing fans (offline)
I have a trick for finding out if white fabric is going to be see-through. I hold it up to the tattoos on my forearm but you could also do this with a watch or bangle. Also, if there’s a mirror in the store I bring the bolt of fabric over to the mirror to see if it looks good on me or the colour suits me.
  • Clips or pins (which ones)?
I used to be pins, now I’m more of a glue or clips person. The KATM Label Gluestick I use in most applications where I would previously use pins.
  • Do your sewing machines have names?
One of my sewing machines has a name; I used to collect Bernina Record 830’s second hand and refurbish them to re-sell on my website ‘Bernina Babes’ with a guy called Martin (Brisbane’s Bernina guy who’d been around from the 70’s). This one machine came in with a take-up lever completely snapped off. Martin pulled it apart and put it back together and it works better than any of the other machines I’d ever used. I vowed I’d never sell this one…its name is Stella!
